I have a macbook pro 6,2 and I'm having problems getting the backlight control working. I've installed pommed but it seems to be having trouble with this system.
When I run pommed -d, I get this (amongst other, I think, irrelevant info)...
DMI vendor name: [Apple Inc.]
DMI product name: [MacBookPro6,2]
I: DMI machine check: running on a MacBookPro6,2
System: Linux 2.6.34-mbp x86_64
Failed to access brightness node: No such file or directory
I've installed and loaded nvidia-bl and have the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages installed also.
Has anyone had success with this system or run into a similar problem? I'm stumped and really wanting backlight control.

Does:
# cat /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness
Produce anything?

http://allanmcrae.com/2010/04/installin … k-pro-5-5/ and scroll down to "Screen Brightness". Might help

litemotiv: It gives "10"
Allan: I've already loaded nvidia-bl. No good.

Did you blacklist the mbp_nvidia_bl module in rc.conf?
P.s., don't update to kernel 2.6.35, nvidia-bl won't work there yet.

I did. Still no good. I'm still on 2.6.34 fwiw.

If the module works, you should be able to echo different values to that sysfs entry. For instance, as root:
echo 5 > /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness
If that doesn't work, then the module probably doesn't support your 6,2 model yet. In this case you might still be able to change the brightness with the 'smartdimmer' utility from the nvclock package.

Thanks for the help. It appears that this is a no-go for now. I'll just deal with it for now and try again in the future when it frustrates me again.

It seems there is another module which might work better with the 6-series:
mbp-nvidia-bl-dkms (0.24.3~lucid) lucid; urgency=low

* Added MacBook Pro 6,1 and 6,2
* No information for MacBook Pro 7,1 yet.
There is no AUR package for it though, so you will have to try the source from launchpad: https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+ … /+packages
