Video playback fail with XFWM

I've just moved to XFWM and found myself unable to play movies with any player. Bare mplayer and KDE's Dragon (run in XFWM) plays only sound leaving output window black. Totem and VLC just exit immediately after opening a file (I've tried different .avi and .flv files). Any ideas how to fix?

Youtube works ok.
In KDE none of players had any problems, everything worked ok.

Update: As I've found, actually, video works now, but only for some time after reboot. Then image of a video which was being played freezes, and any newly opened videos show symptoms described above.

I think I have the same error here, but with KDE. mplayer playing only sound, vlc just crashes. mplayer from command line gives me following error:

X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)

found a workaround: use x11 as video ouput - in vlc's settings or by adding the command line option -vo x11 to mplayer. doesn't solve the problem, but gives me at least video...

@strangeattractor: what graphics driver do you use? I downgraded nvidia to 195 and now video playback seems fine again...

If xfwm provides some kind of compositing, i'd try to turn it off.

I use xfwm with its built-in compositor and all videos play fine. Doesn't matter which renderer, e.g Xv/GL/VAAPI all work fine.

So, what's your video card? Driver? Xorg version?

slpci gives
"Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)."

In mkinitcpio.conf I've got

I've forgotten the command which displays the version. The version is the latest available in Arch testing repos.

And yes, absolutely no problems if using KDE.

So now I have to use web browser with a flash plugin to play videos :-( (fortunately the most of them are available in flv). But when I tried to turn flash video player full screen, the screen went standby (screen power led turned yellow) and the second screen freezed, so I had to use hardware system reset.

To administrator: As I'm a Linux newbie (just moved to Linux from Windows XP 3 weeks ago) I've posted my question in the "Newbie Corner" forum. But maybe we should move it to "Desktop Environments" or some other specialized forum?

I'm not sure If my problem is identical, but recently I stopped being able to play movies.

Now that I've re-read the post, I see that my problem is probably not identical. I did try to play movies in KDE (I use openbox now) and it didn't work there either. I might downgrade my nvidia drivers tomorrow to see if that solves the problem. I may even switch to Nouveau. (I have to spell-check that name every time I type it!)

Which worked perfect with eerything but FWWM :-( BTW not only KDE 4.5 worked ok with it, not only was I able to warch multiple videos at a time using multiple windows on multiple screens in Windows XP (With MPlayerC and VLC), I've even successfully played Half-Life 2 from start to finish wit this GPU without a single problem or glitch.

It was good till about a year ago. Now it may be unsupported.
You may want to read about the bugs and apply the patches if they're not in the kernel already http://www.iragan.com/linux/i855GM/

I'm not saying your card is bad, but comparing it to nvidia doesn't make much sense. I have an even older intel card and it also works fine - in dwm :-)

Karol: I think that you are referring to the bottom portion of this article, where it mentions some legacy drivers. I don't think my card has gone legacy yet, (could be any day now). I'll go through the Nouveau wiki article as soon as I get a chance though, just in case it helps. In the mean time, I have to get ready to visit my lady friend!

Saying ideally, it does not solve the problem of course. But for me it is an excellent solution fpr most cases except some HD files I meet from time to time which I would like to downscale. I usually prefer watching 320x200 FLV videos (in a small window in a corner of a screen while working). A same FLV clip takes about 100% CPU to be played in a web browser with page-embedded Adobe Flash player and only 4% to be played wiht "mplayer -vo x11" with even composition (transparency) working!
