Yup - my gateway netbook boots ok, but then it dies after some few seconds. Sometimes I have time to log in, other times not. I use 'startx' but have never had time to invoke it even when I manage to log in. There is nothing unusual in the boot-messages (and I have compared (using tkdiff) /var/log/messages from both the .34 and .35 kernel). When I say it dies - it just quietly goes into a deep slumber - keyboard doesn't work, mouse doesn't work and there is nothing I can do to 'wake' it up - short of cycling power! This is true for _all_ 2.6.35-kernels so far.
2.6.34 works just fine - absolutely no problems
Any ideas??
[edit] btw - it's a 686-kernel [/edit]

I have a gateway netbook and it locks up when I bring up my wireless network card. Perhaps we're experiencing the same problem...
Instead of logging in via your login-manager, switch to a virtual console and log in there. Then bring up your network card and see if it crashes.
# ifconfig wlan0 up # replace wlan0 with your wireless card's name
If that isn't the problem, I'd suggest disabling any services that start up when you log in. Then enable them one by one and see which one kills your PC.

As indicated in my original post - I dont use a login manager.
However, your point is a good one and I will disable the network services and see if it makes any difference (have to wait until I get home today)

Thanks nikosapi - it was indeed the exactly same problem!
When I didn't load wicd upon booting - it works fine. Then, the moment I bring up the wireless it dies :-(
Like you - I have downgraded to the 2.6.34-kernel which is working just dandy. Guess I'll keep it like that until the problem is solved for good ...
[edit] I'll mark this as 'solved' - now I have a full explanation!![/edit]
