Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi,

I'm a student from bavaria (Germany), studying bioinformatics. I'm using Linux since about 4 years now, switching distributions fairly often. Most of the time I used Ubuntu, but got across some others, too (Sidux, Debian, Suse, Mandriva). I tried arch once, but did not get it to work properly. This time (using the wiki and the forums a lot) I fell in love with my arch system from the beginning (because it only did, what I made it to do big_smile ).
The main reasons for changing were the better understanding of the system, to be forced to use the console and config files (haven't  even installed a file manager), and not have to wait and install the next release of the distribution (like every 6 months in Ubuntu).
I never liked my system on my x200 laptop that much before, like I do arch+openbox now wink

Thanks to the developers and the community (esp. the wiki editors) for this great piece of work.
Hope at given time I can recoup the help you all have given to me, by helping others myself wink

Greetings, Peter

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi people!

I'm Rob, 19, from New York. I installed Arch for my first time ever yesterday and am very excited to be using it. I've only really used five distros (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Dream Linux and CrunchBang) for about 8 months total so I'm not too experienced with Linux but I enjoy learning about everything you can do and have been having a lot of fun playing with Arch. Pacman is really awesome too!

Arch is an amazing distro with insane tools and community and I'm looking forward to playing with it in the future!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everybody. Another Arch newcomer here.

I'm a 20 year old law student from Ireland. I've been using (some variant of) Ubuntu for the last few years, and have a basic knowledge of how to get around in the command line, but apart from that I didn't have much knowledge of how Linux actually works. I wanted to try something which would involve looking a little deeper into the operating system, but I also needed stability and ease of use. So Arch was a good mix for me. Installation was fine and most things seem to be running smoothly. I'm getting some weird behaviour from GDM but in general it works great. I'm running Gnome, as I said I need stability so I went with what I'm used to. If I get a spare laptop (a friend is getting a new one soon so I said I'd take her old one off her hands) I'd like to play around with some funky window managers.

Glad to be here. Undoubtedly I'll soon have tons of questions to ask. I'll try not to be too annoying, and thanks in advance for any help I get here!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Good evening everyone.
My name is Vasilache Anton Ciprian and I'm from Romania.
My linux adventure started like 2 years ago after I got sick of windoze and micro$.That was the last time I used windows.Since then I've been using various distros getting accommodated with the CLI and everything else that essentially means linux.
Ubuntu was a nice introduction, but as would Cobb say(Inception lol) "We need to go deeper".Soon I got bored of all that 'ppa' thing.
After that I started looking for what I would later find to be a rolling release. But that wasn't enough.I needed cutting-edge packages.
The Arch way enlightened my path.
With full control over what I want and what I don't I feel like the computer is finally mine.
I use kde with some gtk apps like pidgin, furiusiomount and others.
Oxygen-molecule ftw.
I'm here to learn new things about arch.
I consider myself a noob with some basic linux knowledge as I couldn't successfully install gentoo.I hope in time I will accomplish that too.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone.

I have used Linux for several years, starting with Red Hat 9 and then Fedora Core.  I have used Ubuntu and Xubuntu for the past couple years, but they never quite feel "right".  I have been playing with Arch on and off for a year while using Xubuntu.  I have now switched to Arch full time and am loving it!  I switch back and forth between Xfce and Openbox.  I love the minimal-ness of Openbox, but sometimes want a more full featured desktop environment.  Xfce has plenty of features, but remains lightweight.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey people., I'm Kris from London and I'm a 1 year Linux user. I am a second year computer science student at Queen Mary university of London. I currently run Ubuntu minimal on my main machine but have decided to install Arch on my netbook as I have been playing with it in VMs for a little while now.
I'm really enjoying it so far and think it's great to have the control. I can't believe how extensive and informative the Arch wiki is, everything I've needed so far has been very well documented.

Depending on how things go, I may switch to Arch as my main distro as it feels more advance Linux then ubuntu...

Great to be here

Hello, nice to meet you all!

I'm trusktr (pronounced "true skater", but some people say "trusk-ter" or "trukster" lol). I ♥ skateboarding.

Anyways, Arch is the first and only distro I've ever used! I did my research before diving into linux, and when I stumbled on Arch, I immediately knew it was the distro I had to try first.

I'm using Arch as my workstation OS to help with design and development of the shoe company I ride for, Betta Footwear, as well as personal projects like graphic and web design, videography, and music.

See ya on the forums! (or in person if you're lucky wink )

hello_world();

Been a Linux user for a few years, stuck with Ubuntu for way too long... but I ditched it last weekend to install Arch and I'm never gonna look back.
I'll be looking to contribute in some way... still browsing for now! :)

Hey,

I'm Joel. I'm a math and computer science student. I've been using Arch for a few months now. I'm pretty excited about my current setup, using XMonad, and Arch in general.

I'll go ahead and boost my geek cred a bit by noting that my first linux machine was an Xbox.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone,

I am from Malaysia. My first contact with GNU/Linux was in 1998 with Red Hat and Caldera (can not remember the exact name). But I always go back to Windows after a few hours wresting with the installer. Found Ubuntu in late 2004 and have been a happy GNU/Linux user ever since. Maybe some will recognize my nickname from Ubuntuforums. I was quite active in there around 2005-2006.

I have tried Archlinux a few times since last year, but have been too pampered and spoiled by Ubuntu. I ran back to Ubuntu after a few days with Archlinux.

But since Lucid, Ubuntu does not feel "right" anymore. Not to say it's a bad distribution, but I miss the pure GNOME that I fell in love a few years ago. Hence I'm back to trying Archlinux.

So here I am, been using Archlinux since last week. I've resisted to urge to go back to Ubuntu. Now that I have configured Archlinux to my preference... I think I'm going to be with Archlinux longer this time smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi there,

So far I love arch! I started on ubuntu about 3 years ago, then changed from kubuntu to xubuntu, then to crunchbang (yet another ubuntu derivitive). Which taught me a lot but definitely not enough. I been so used to the easy path, but after pretty much installing everything and configuring everything I don't think I'll every go back a 'beginner's Linux'

big_smile

The exponential learning curve.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Well, Crunchbang has also a debian flavored version: that's Statler 10, based on debian squeeze repos. A Very good distro indeed: my desire to deepen my knowledge of Linux started with Crunchbang/Debian!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone smile
New to Arch, not new to Linux - I've been using Ubuntu on and off for the last three years or so, but sadly never quite managed to make the shift to Linux as my only operating system as I'm a musician and I like to use Sibelius to write my music. Despite experiments with Lilypond, Sibelius is still quicker and better.

Recently I made the decision to learn me a C++, with the aim of helping develop an open source alternative to Sibelius - whether existing or entirely new, I have yet to find out. For the moment, I'm hoping to help out with Lilypond but I need a Linux development environment... you can guess the rest.

I'm no Linux expert (I've made one very stupid post already), but I have a basic knowledge and now that I've got my Arch configured with SliM/Openbox I'll be hoping to see you all around some more smile

I'm Eddotan, and i'm new Arch user, but I can learn easily except for my bad english, but I'll do my best :-)
I've joined to linux by Debian distro, it's a nice, easy and friendly distro, but when I saw about Archlinux, I installed, and saw perfomance of my PC and wow, I like it. I think it'll be my primary OS for a while :3

well, greetings~!

Hi everyone!

I'm Dominic aka tom and use GNU/Linux now for some ages but only privat.

I was using before: SuSE, Redhat, Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo.
Now i use 4 machines: a) my laptop with Arch Linux, b) my game-pc with Windows, c) my local network server with Debian and d) my rented web/mail server with Gentoo.

I'm using Arch for nearly one year, though I feel like I got it yesterday =)

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone!

Just finished my installation after 24h of hard work. I never had Arch before but it seems pretty stable and fast. The Forum and the Wikis are great and I never had to search somewhere else!

I appreciate your support very much; it is a motivated and helpful community and I think arch will remain on my laptop. Talking about 'think' I installed it on my Thinkpad t410 and it is incredible fast. There are just some issues, which i cannot fix till now: adjusting the back light is one issue that bothers me a lot.

well i have to learn a lot about pacman and how to uninstall unused packages and how to keep the system clean and fast.

Thanks again for the help and I guess we meet again in some other posting.

ciao
#EO

p.s. if someone knows how to measure the complete and overall uptime/lifetime of arch AND/OR my laptop, that would be nice, too.
