[Solved]VirtualBox crashes my entire host system
So I'm having a bit of trouble with VirtualBox lately... (aur/virtualbox_bin package)
when I try to start my WinXP guest (which has
never had a problem in the past) my computer (host) instantly reboots itself or locks up solid (only
thing i could do was pull the plug)...
I tried recompiling the kernel modules of course, and this time starting my guest caused the system to
reboot instantly instead of hard-lock (a slight improvement I guess...)
If my memory serves me, Vbox may have been updated to 3.2.8 and/or a kernel upgrade happened since the last time it was working...though I am not certain of this.
I've been stumped about how to solve this since there doesn't seem to be any error logs or any logging that could
be done given that the computer locks up/reboots so fast.
Perhaps there is some sort of "debug" or "safe" mode for vbox that I'm not aware of? makes it hard for me
to troubleshoot when the computer is forced to shutdown uncleanly everytime...

Hi Evanlec,
I had the same problem on two machines, too.
As you say recompiling and reloading the kernel module doesn't help.
What solved it for me was to pacman -Rsn virtualbox_bin and then install it again.
Maybe I restarted the PC after some point.
Don't know why reinstalling helped but recompiling not.

you said that recompiling the modules doesn,t work but note that you need to unload and load them again to have effect. That's the only reason vbox is crashing like that because 2.6.35.4 was a bit special

Maybe I just used modprobe after and not modprobe -r before. Didn't know that one has to unload it, thanks.
And thanks for the information that it was caused by the kernel.
