Chromium hogs the sound

If I have Chromium running then I can't get sound in any other application.  Killing chromium fixes all sound issues, but surely it should be possible to have chromium running and still get sound elsewhere...?

That does seem to help - although now wmix fails because it can't find /dev/mixer 

How do I figure out what the alsa equivalent mixer device would be?
