Actually with the newest catalyst in 10.8 which makes 3d not so smooth when vsync is enabled, but without vsync I had no issues so far.

Just add the repository, do pacman -S catalyst and put fglrx in your rc.conf MODULES. Then create a xorg.conf with aticonfig --initial and start X (after modprobing fglrx!).

so is there any point to use catalyst for R600 ati cards ? (mobility HD3670) I get no video acceleration and flash take 30% cpu to run, please advise.

10.9 is a good release. Solved some problems i have, for example, resizing smplayer windows with xv output and composite on always give me a hard crash. Water plugin on compiz doesn´t work but at least doesn´t freeze my machine now. I don't have to reload compiz windows manager anymore!. I put v-sync always on with amdccle and compiz works very very well. I installed new flash on my 32 bits machine and works like a dream with chromium, is smooth. 1080p videos are fluid and "only" consumes 15 % of my core i5 750 @ 3,38 ghz CPU.

I agree, this is a good one. I found that the vsync bug was fixed for my card where when I enable vsync via amdcccle it forces it to 30 Hz instead of my monitor's 60Hz in 3d applications.

Previously I would enable vsync, then open glxgears and I would get ~30 FPS. Now I get 60.

I also noticed that my switching time between DISPLAY:0 and DISPLAY:1 is waaaay faster than it used to be. I run a second X server for playing SC and SC2 so I can keep everything separate in the event of a crash, and in the past it has taken an embarrassingly long time to switch using ctrl+alt+F7/F8.

Testing Starcraft 2 now.
EDIT:

Well SC2 won't even launch anymore. Oh well, I normally reboot into Windows 7 to play that. SC Brood Wars still plays fine.

I'm reading here and there that the new 10.9 drivers don't generate artifacts anymore, so i was wondering,
is it safe to remove the maximize-fix patched xorg and put the classic unpatched one instead?

Man, I can't find the file...

I wrote "aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE" in a file, so that Arch starts with this option and I don't have to restart the X-Server. Now I want to get rid of it, but I forgot, in which file I wrote it in. Does anyone know, where this file can be?

I just have a little issue: when I update package (10.8 => 10.9 for example) amdcccle always show me like I didn't upgrade, I have still "10.8" in the information tab.
How can I be sure I really been updated ??

You can do "aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,FALSE" to undo it.
It is /etc/ati/amdpcsdb
But I think it may be not a too bad idea to remove the whole /etc/ati directory when installing a new catalyst to make sure there are no deprecated functions in there.

Only if you want newest OpenGL Features I would say.
But the Open Driver is already very good. I have seen sauerbraten on nearly highest settings run very smooth with the -git drivers, -git mesa and -drm-testing kernel.

Yesterday i posted solution on the wiki:
- Amdcccle is showing different catalyst's version
It's because information about version is stored in /etc/ati/amdpcsdb file. This file is created while first run of X/DE by freshly installed catalyst, and later it's not updated. Solution: kill your X/DE, then remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb, restart your X/DE, and then set up amdcccle.

I think that removing /etc/ati/amdpcsdb is a "must do" after main catalyst update.

No, you must kill X/DE before removing file. Simple remove won't give anything because this file will be immediately restored by catalyst drivers.

Sometimes and with no apparent reason, xorg is working hard and eat 100% of one cpu. Then I have to kill X and take a new session. How can I know if it is a xorg problem or a application problem or a kde problem or a catalyst problem ?

I would also say that power save is much better with catalyst. For a laptop user this is a key feature.

Well... it's not easy to get such information, because to investigate it you will have to involve debugging, tracing, mapping and other developing tricks. And even for good developer it's sometimes hard to tell whats causing the problem...

So i suggest you to do some easier things like:
- disabling some kde features/services (like plasma elements or powerdevil) or kwin's effects or kwin's settings
- playing with amdcccle
- if you are still observing high CPU usage i guess you should search web for fixes (sometimes it's related with hardware like gpu or mobo, so it's good to provide such info in search query)

Also maybe you are catching some X server lockup, and high cpu is just a side effect for this. You should look up at /var/log/Xorg.0.log for some errors. Plus look at /var/log/kdm.log and if there is something similar to "stuck in an infinite loop" related with a date when you experinced high cpu usage - it's most probably an X bug, and you should fill bug report. If you dicide to fill bug report - be sure to name it as "xserver lockup', not 'high cpu usage'.

I always do these steps to install catalyst:

1. sudo pacman -Rd catalyst
2. sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
3. sudo rm -fr /etc/ati
4. yaourt -S catalyst
5. reboot (is not really needed)

ok, but i think that actually there's no need of removing xorg.conf, because it contains only basic settings.
im using same xorg.conf for about umm... i dunno year, maybe longer.

plus i believe that since split - it's better to use original (better ;P) makepkg, because with it you don't need to download ati-driver-* file 2 times.
So just simply download tarballs of catalyst (or catalyst-hook or catalyst-daemon) and catalyst-utils from aur,
(edit3)
extract it
cd catalyst-utils
makepkg -c
sudo pacman -U catalyst-utils-*.tar.xz
(or if you are updating: sudo pacman -Ud catalyst-utils-*.tar.xz )
cp ati-driver-* ../catalyst
cd ../catalyst
makepkg -ci

that's all.
Basically i'm using bauerbill to check were aur's packages updated, and i'm building them with makepkg. Also i think that bauerbill is better than yaourt

Plus - is yaourt still removing source files after update?
If so - using makepkg is much better - because you don't need to download ati-driver-* to rebuild fglrx module after kernel's update - just `makepkg -ci` in catalyst directory that you previously created.

I understand that you are updating(?)

If so - are you using repo or aur? if repo - note that catalyst package provides only fglrx module for stock kernel26.
catalyst-utils package is necessary.

Please paste file generated by /usr/sbin/atigetsysteminfo.sh on some pastebin server (and give us link to it ).

Can i run # catalyst_build_module auto without installing catalyst-hook or catalyst-daemon? (I have only one kernel version but i would it to rebuild the module automatically on every kernel update)

No it's not enabled....I wasn't aware that you had to manually enable it. i'm going to give that a shot. Thanks.

I had it disabled via this command:

aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE

I'll set it to false, then install xorg-server and test.

once you typed `aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE` - it will always work (its stored in /etc/ati/amdpcsdb).
I suggest to remove amdpcsdb in the way i posted here.
