Man, that slipped under my radar...oh, it's off...

no kidding dibble. where have you been?
heh. I must admit though, no matter how many times I hear "mandriva", I realize it still sucks as a distro name.
It brings to mind a drooling preying mantis, or....a high speed cop chase involving a nude man in a cadillac racing towards the mexican border..

Yeah, there's nothing like vaginatizing your distro name to get more people to use it.
Oh!, and I know!, we'll make people pay to be members so only they can get the good stuff! Yeah that's it! I'll get right on that...right after I finish eating my big heaping bowl of dumbass this morning.

Heh, I allways liked the name 'mandrake'. It's a shame to see it go.

Yeah, I'm not fond of the new name either, but do hope the distro continues to be successful. Lots of Linux addicts got their starts with Mandrake, and in my opinion, it would be a bit of a negative blow for the forward progress of Linux if it, or any of the major distros should become flops.
Yesterday, I did an FTP install of the newly released "Mandriva Limited Edition 2005" to see what it looks like. It has a new boot theme, default background, and some updated packages, and it seemed to work pretty well for the most part, but of course, after playing around with it thoughout the day, I reinstalled the almighty Arch.

Mandrake and Connectiva were both good names, the merger of the two sucks.
Honestly, I have more respect for Connectiva than Mandrake because I've always had bad experiences with Mandrake. Oh well, I hope the merger is beneficial to everyone involved.

I guess we should all be thankful they didn't choose "ConDrake" instead.

ah - i really did miss this then!

sounds too much like Mandrivel to me

Yeah, I got my start on Mandrake - any monkey can install it. Pity the name change is rather queer. I'll probably have a look once the free ISOs come out, but then add it to the pile of unused distros I've gathered.
"DrakeDiva"?
I'd hit that, in a strange and disturbing way.

the only thing I applaud Mandrake (oops Mandriva) for is the decision to make a more stable release. They have been trying to be both a stable for business distro and a fast changing for hobbyst with the same package set, thus ending up with a lot of instability issues. The new direction with a more stable release and giving optionally up to date packages for hobbyst on their club is a good idea. That way you can either be stable or bleeding edge depending on your needs.

Or you can choose Arch and have both. 8)

should have been "Man-diva" - makes me think of the bad parts of "Boys Town" here in chicago....

does this mean utilities like "diskdrake" will become "diskdriva"?
cause that would be MAD lame... and no, not the Audio Codec.
"Mandriva" = "Mangina", dunno why but that's all that comes to mind with a teriable name like that. O well though, a name is a name, it shouldnt be the deciding factor if something is good or not.

I liked Mandrake, thought it was much faster than redhat too; but after ver. 8.2, every release had annoying bugs. It still seems to maintain a loyal following. Hope it does well. But the new name sucks!

One reason for the name change is because Mandrake is a tradmark name for a comic book character: "Mandrake the magician". They probably wanted to avoid the law suit..

Mandrake was already registered, so they first changed it to "MandrakeLinux" and now to "Mandriva", which is admittedly cacophonous.
The distro is very good as a "newbie plus" distro though, currently toying with the latest 2005LE and having quite some fun... my biggest concern is their kernels, which are stuffed to the brim with all sorts of odd patches. Bug squashing is also not their strong point, but the distro in general is very well cooked, stirred and served.

Do not have to tell me, on my Mandrake days like 2-3 years ago I reported some bugs, one of them very annoying for a developer. They do not include KDE documentation and lacks the tools to generate one. All my bugs at the end were resolved as OLD or INACTIVE, but I think that by 9.2 it still have the issue. Haven't test them lately and sincerely do not care anyway.
The irony was a subpar KDE development environment on an usually KDE centric distro. And even RedHat 8/9 with their criticized and supposed mutilated KDE has a perfectly working KDE/Kdevelop environment.
