[SOLVED] mpd update problem... take 2323 :(

Hi everyone. I've been torturing myself with mpd and ncmpcpp for some time now, I seearched the forums but wasn't very succesfull... I installed mpd, went "the easier way", e.g. creating all the neccesary files in my home folder, mpd starts fine (it succesfully finds an alsa device), but when I try updating hte database in ncmpcpp, I only get a blank screen. I also tried --create-db, but to no avail.

When I press F7 while in ncmpcpp, it sais that the configuration variable mpd_music_dir is not set. Here's my ~/.mpd/config, and as you can see, the music directory is set:

# An example configuration file for MPD
# See the mpd.conf man page for a more detailed description of each parameter.

# Files and directories #######################################################
#
# This setting controls the top directory which MPD will search to discover the
# available audio files and add them to the daemon's online database. This
# setting defaults to the XDG directory, otherwise the music directory will be
# be disabled and audio files will only be accepted over ipc socket (using
# file:// protocol) or streaming files over an accepted protocol.
#
music_directory        "~/Music"
#
# This setting sets the MPD internal playlist directory. The purpose of this
# directory is storage for playlists created by MPD. The server will use
# playlist files not created by the server but only if they are in the MPD
# format. This setting defaults to playlist saving being disabled.
#
playlist_directory        "~/.mpd/playlists"
#
# This setting sets the location of the MPD database. This file is used to
# load the database at server start up and store the database while the
# server is not up. This setting defaults to disabled which will allow
# MPD to accept files over ipc socket (using file:// protocol) or streaming
# files over an accepted protocol.
#
db_file            "~/.mpd/mpd.db"
#
# These settings are the locations for the daemon log files for the daemon.
# These logs are great for troubleshooting, depending on your log_level
# settings.
#
# The special value "syslog" makes MPD use the local syslog daemon. This
# setting defaults to logging to syslog, otherwise logging is disabled.
#
log_file            "~/.mpd/mpd.log"
#
# This setting sets the location of the file which stores the process ID
# for use of mpd --kill and some init scripts. This setting is disabled by
# default and the pid file will not be stored.
#
pid_file            "~/.mpd/mpd.pid"
#
# This setting sets the location of the file which contains information about
# most variables to get MPD back into the same general shape it was in before
# it was brought down. This setting is disabled by default and the server
# state will be reset on server start up.
#
state_file            "~/.mpd/mpdstate"
error_file            "~/.mpd/mpd.error"

That's a setting of ncmpcpp—not mpd. You should create a line like

mpd_music_dir = "~/Music"

in your "~/.ncmpcpp/config" file.

Re: [SOLVED] mpd update problem... take 2323 :(

from the wiki:

Creating the database is now accomplished via the update feature of the client, for example if you were running ncmpcpp you would just enter 'u'.
The previous method, creating the MPD database as root (# mpd --create-db), is deprecated.

Re: [SOLVED] mpd update problem... take 2323 :(

@Vain

Thx for the feedback: did copy the example config file from /usr folder to ~/.ncmpcpp/config, changed the appropriate line, but it still doesn't find any song folders, when i press F7, now it sais that directory hasn't been found :S.

@stefanwilkens

I said in my first post that I first tried updating via "u" in ncmpcpp, that failed, and then i also tried --create-db, which as well didn't work.

I forgot to mention: I first tried installing the Arch way - in the /var folders according to wiki. Does it maybe have something to do with the "mpd" user still being active?

Re: [SOLVED] mpd update problem... take 2323 :(

Start mpd using your own config

$ mpd ~/.mpd/config

instead system wide config

$ mpd

Ask, and it shall be given you.
Seek, and ye shall find.
Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

Re: [SOLVED] mpd update problem... take 2323 :(

mpd will first look for a local config file in ~/.mpdconf and if it doesn't find any, a system config file /etc/mpd.conf. So if you move .mpd/config to .mpdconfig you don't need to supply an argument for the mpd command.

This thread is from September. For future reference, necro-bumping is discouraged to keep the forums clean https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … Bumping.27.
While this thread is only six months old, adding an "it works" to a solved thread is kind of pointless.
Anyway, welcome to the forums.
