Hey there.
I'm using Arch with KDE and have installed the catalyst driver from the [catalyst] repositotry (see wiki ). I also installed the latest update:
[user@host ~]$ pacman -Qs catalyst
local/catalyst 10.9-3
AMD/ATI Catalyst drivers for kernel26. fglrx kernel module only
local/catalyst-utils 10.9-1
AMD/ATI Catalyst drivers utilities and libraries.
local/lib32-catalyst-utils 10.9-1 (lib32)
AMD/ATI catalyst driver utilities and libraries. (32-bit)
local/xorg-server-backclear 1.8.1.902-1 (xorg)
X.Org X servers with backclear patch that fix slow maximizing and resizing with catalyst
[user@host ~]$
My problem is, that the KWin effects are not working, e.g. wobbly or transparent windows. I right-click on any window (e.g. firefox) -> "Configure Window Behavior..." -> "Desktop Effects". Then, everything is grayed out and it says:
"Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:" without any issue specification.
I'm not sure what other information might be relevant to you... maybe this:
[user@host ~]$ X -version
This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.
See http://wiki.x.org/wiki/GitPage for git access instructions.

Do I maybe have to install anything else to make this work? Or is this news relevant somehow:
News: KDE SC 4.5.0 moved to [extra]
2010-08-24 - Ronald van HarenKDE SC 4.5.0 has moved into the [extra] repository. Notable changes with respect to previous releases are:
* kdepim has seen no new release, please continue to use version 4.4.5
* due to incompatibility with ruby 1.9, ruby kdebindings are not provided
* webkit support in konqueror is provided by kwebkitpart
* KDM is now started as the kdm user
* upstream removed five translations: csb, mai, mk, si and tgThe full upstream changelog is available here.
Several users reported issues with kwin hanging when changing settings in the kdesettings dialog. So far this is only known to happen on some Intel and ATI cards with opengl compositing enabled. Possible workarounds include:
* use xrender instead of opengl compositing
* disable compositing
* disable direct rendering under opengl options in the kdesettings menu
* export "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" before starting KDE
Have it from here.
Tell me please, if you need any other information! Or if this is not even the right place for this topic (KDE forum?).
Thanks for reading.
(by the way: it's also irritating that when you click on "Configure Window Behavior..." "Desktop Effects" is pre-selected but not really displayed.... But I guess, here is not the right place to address this minor issue...)

Try
pacman -Rd catalyst
pacman -S catalyst-hook
and restart
Offline
I had the same problem. What i did was opened up the system settings/desktop effects, click advanced then checked vsync. Poof wobbly windows and window transparency again. If it's already checked, click it on off again and your set.
You can try the patched xorg using the catalyst repository as per the wiki, might fix things up.

hey LukynZ,
thanks for the hint. I tried it but didn't work. Same situation as before... Would some specific output be helpful?

Hey Snakeye,
also thanks to you! Well, the problem is, I cannot even click on Advanced because everything under "System Settings -> Desktop Effects" is grayed out. See yourself:
Anybody got an idea? I would really like to get this working... :-/
Thanks for all your help so far!

I had the same issue before. After removing kwin's configuration files, it worked again.

I have had something like this happen a few times, too. Removing ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc always seems to fix it.

@Ginsu, monshin: thank you! Fixed it... too easy to see this solution.
Thanks!

Deleting the whole config file is kind of... rubbish solution.
Just open .kde4/share/config/kwinrc and search for this line:
OpenGLIsUnsafe=true
Because of this line, there are some background checks by kwin at each startup if your video card is able to handle with the effects. Obviously, sometimes got it wrong with this functionality.
So if you set it to false - everything is fine as well and user doesn't loose all of his kwin settings

@ Vladimiroff
Thanks very much, solved my problems. And saved me another hour or so

@Vladimiroff: Thanks for your update on this topic! Very helpful!
that also explains why the last
pacman -Syu
caused an installation of kwinrc.pacnew. I totally forgot that I deleted that.
I was wrong,
pacman -Syu
caused an installation of
/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.pacnew
. But I have no clue how I should treat that. I had a look on the wiki but I'm not aware that I ever touched kdmrc... Plus I am unfamiliar with the values in there and it seems like the pacnew file is very different. @Vladimiroff: could you maybe help me if I post a diff of the two files?

doesn't work for me.
The system is to slow when the file kwinrc is deleted and efects don't work.. and the efect still don't work when false is enabled in kwinrc file
