[SOLVED] Frei0r-plugins 1.2-1 upgrade breaking Pidgin

Pidgin will no longer run subsequent to upgrading to the most recent frei0r-plugins 1.2-1. When running Pidgin via the command line, here is the output:

[ejm@Galicja ~]$ pidgin

ERROR: Caught a segmentation fault while loading plugin file:
/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstfrei0r.so

Please either:
- remove it and restart.
- run with --gst-disable-segtrap and debug.

Re: [SOLVED] Frei0r-plugins 1.2-1 upgrade breaking Pidgin

There seems to be some kind of conflict going on. Gstreamer includes one version, libgstfrei0r.so, but there's also a single frei0r-plugins package. It looks the conflict is between these two. I found one package on my system that need frei0r-plugins, kdenlive.

Do you have the frei0r-plugins installed parallel to the gstreamer package?

Bump!

I need this fixed badly. What can i do until the proper fix comes ? Should i uninstall frei0r-plugins package ?

EDIT: uninstalled kdenlive and frei0r-plugins. Pidgin works now.

Re: [SOLVED] Frei0r-plugins 1.2-1 upgrade breaking Pidgin

It would have been enough to downgrade frei0r-plugins for now and keep kdenlive while investigating its cause. Previous version of frei0r-plugins doesn't interfere with gstreams version, I've tested. Rebuilding pidgin on the other hand has no effect, so the issue is isolated to a conflict between frei0r-plugins packages.

Re: [SOLVED] Frei0r-plugins 1.2-1 upgrade breaking Pidgin

@KimTjik: The package frei0r-plugins 1.2-1 is actually conflicting with gstreamer0.10 (which I have installed), and Pidgin is dependent on gstreamer0.10-base (also installed and is dependent on gstreamer0.10), which is why Pidgin isn't running. Technically, I should change the title of this thread. wink

@vagif: I'm just going to wait until an updated and fixed version of frei0r-plugins is released into the repository for download.

Re: [SOLVED] Frei0r-plugins 1.2-1 upgrade breaking Pidgin

@vagif: If you're familiar with abs, you could build pidgin with

--disable-gstreamer --disable-gstreamer-interfaces

and install. That fixes it, but I guess you can't using pidgin for video chat tho...

Did anyone already file a bug report?

Not yet, I thought perhaps the issue would have been resolved by only mentioning it in the forums. You can do the honors, thanks!

Nothing gets resolved by mentioning in the forums. The devs do not go around looking for bugs to fix here. I'd suggest you sign up a bug-tracker account and submit this issue there, think of it as your community contribution.
