[SOLVED] GrADS

The Grid Analysis and Display System (GrADS) is an interactive desktop tool that is used for easy access, manipulation, and visualization of earth science data. The format of the data may be either binary, GRIB, NetCDF, or HDF-SDS (Scientific Data Sets).

Is anyone willing to update the grads package in AUR? The GrADS homepage can be found here: http://badc.nerc.ac.uk/help/software/grads/

(Background information: I want to try GrADS for my Bachelor thesis but don't have time to mess around with other stuff at the moment. I would be willing to be the maintainer once I learn more about PKGBUILDs).

It would be great if I could just get the outdated source to compile. Currently I get the following error when I run makepkg (all dependencies in the PKGBUILD installed):

make[2]: *** No rule to make target `latsnc-nc.o', needed by `gradsdods'.  Stop.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/hans/builds/grads/src/grads-1.9b4/src'
make[1]: *** [all] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/hans/builds/grads/src/grads-1.9b4/src'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

I'm also confused about the dependencies. grads has hdf4 as a makedepend, which conflicts with netcdf. However, grads depends on netcdf, and hdf4 doesn't provide it.
Now I didn't install netcdf since another dependency, libnc-dap, provides it. There's still a problem with conflict though.

Well, this package needs a big update (compiling the dependencies ATM)
But downloading ftp://iges.org/grads/2.0/grads-2.0.a8-src.tar.gz and ./configure + make are working fine (but it isn't complete without the dependencies, many things are lacking)

Thanks for looking at it mathieui. I tried to compile it manually and it works (same with the binary they provide), but it seems to need some tweaks. For example, when I use sdfopen it says

udunits(3): Couldn't open units database "/usr/local/lib/grads/udunits.dat": No such file or directory

Yup, udunits installed.

The udunits package in AUR installs udunits.dat to /usr/share/udunits/udunits.dat.

Thanks. I guess I'll compile and install grads manually (and in my home directory) and make a symlink (urgh) to fix the udunits thing... for now.

I don't think that this has to do with the udunits package. here is a part of the "INSTALL" file that comes with the package from ftp://iges.org/grads/2.0/grads-2.0.a8-src.tar.gz

A second tar file (data.tar.Z) contains the GrADS fonts and maps data sets is
also necessary and can be downloaded from http://grads.iges.org/grads/downloads.html.
The contents of data.tar are typically placed in the directory
/usr/local/lib/grads, the default location for these files. If you do not have
write permission for /usr/local/lib/grads, you can place the files elsewhere, but
you must also change the environment variable GADDIR so the GrADS executables will
know where to find these files.

here is a part of the file "configure". I think this could be very helpful for building:

Optional Packages:

This is one thing I'm not really sure how to deal with because these dependencies are outlined in the makefile. How do we find why netcdf/hdf4 conflict?

EDIT: A potential solution would be to use this package http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=37456 or you can edit the PKGBUILD of the regular hdf4 package and add the "--disable-netcdf" option to the ./configure.

EDIT #2: Hrm, just editing the PKGBUILD with the "--disable-netcdf" option doesn't seem to be working with yaourt.

Also, anyone know what the patches are for exactly?

Cool, thank you Graziano. I've finished my thesis and didn't need to use grads, but who knows, I'm sure it'll be useful in the future.

Just one small problem with the PKGBUILD (I haven't tested the program yet):

cd ${srcdir}/${pkgname}-${pkgver}

This directory doesn't exist, since ${pkgname} is grads2. Anyway I'm consider this as solved, thanks again.
