Weird behaviour of the numeric pac

I have been experiencing some issues recently with my numeric pad.
It just does not respond at all (i pushed the Num Lock key first)
Im using gnome, and re-selected the keyboard layout without any changes........

Any clue about what is happening to my keyboard?

If you have xorg-utils installed, run xev to see if you get _any_ readout when pressing the keys.

Push down 4 on the numpad and hold it - does your mouse pointer move to the left?
If so, turn off mouse emulation (or similar) in gnome keyboard (?!) preferences.
