I am trying to test out the BFS patched kernel in the AUR. I downloaded it, compiled it and everything. I set up a GRUB entry for it. I am not sure if I did it correctly, but the kernel loads on reboot. However when I login with my user name, I get a no screen error.
Is this because I didn't install the nvidia-bfs drivers? Are those needed for all BFS patched kernels or only the kernel26-ck kernel?

Yes, you need nvidia-bfs. It's the nvidia module that is built upon the bfs kernel. That's what you do for every custom kernel you install aside.

So all that needed is an install of it? What about conflicts or differences from my previous config? Is the bfs-nvidia driver based on the proprietary driver or one of the open source drivers? How does the quality differ?

It's the nvidia proprietary driver and it is compiled against the new kernel, and it will not conflict with any other nvidia package in your system.
If you look into the PKGBUILD, you'll understand everything, it's all there.
