Hey all,
just found this wicked project called q3min. it's a minimal clone of quake 3 arena that's 100% open source + 100% compatible with 3rd party retail files. This means all quake 3 arena mods, custom maps/models work with this project.
this post serves a couple purposes, the main one being give it more exposure to open source enthusiasts + seeing how much interest there is in creating a community/server for US/CAN east coaster users.
some of the major mods that I can confirm that work is Jailbreak: POW, Threewave CTF, Insta-unlagged and FreezeTag.
Since it's been out I've been playing on quake live, but anybody that remembers the glory days of quake 3 arena all know how much better it is to have a community ran server that can be customized to the users needs.

Hey nebri,
thanks for pointing out ! I will check out this evening if I return home from work.
I am currently not playing qlive but still love the old Q3A feeling although I must admit that I am a bit sceptical. OpenArena has gone a far way in terms of providing a good opensource alternative to Q3A. Nevertheless I still dislike OA over Q3A in terms of athmosphere (sound, models, etc). Recreating a Q3A with fully opensource content sounds like a pretty demanding task.

Well on that note, it does have some stuff borrowed from Open Arena. However whats different is that this package aims to recreate the original textures, give them the same filenames as in the original Q3A to make it compatible with the 3rd party retail mods/maps/models. These guys have done a fabulous job, I've been playing threewave ctf with this, jailbreak prisoners of war, OSP, CDMA, I haven't seen one missing texture yet.

Ok, so we are talking about some sort of Q3A replacement based on QA and ioquake3. I am fine with that. I just would love to see some other weapon models for the QA guns. Namely shotgun, plasma and rocket launcher.
In regard to compatibility I can only confirm your observation: Excessive Overkill (E+) as Q3A version works perfectly. It's a pitty that they only package a 32 bit executable but inside a 32 bit chroot things still work fine. Only had to install sdl and openal plus renaming libopenal.so.1 to libopenal.so.0.
Cool start for all folks wanting to play "old" Q3A mods without owning the original Q3A files.
Thumbs up for this "OA fork" ! ![]()
Edit: BTW: The DM maps they have on their page are also very nice. I even found my UT favourite Curse *ggg*

I might have to start playing this if I can't get QL to work... ![]()

mm I really don't understand why start another project instead of helping OA growing. Also OA aims to replace every single copyrighted textures of Q3 with open replacements (and many many maps work really well with that replacement textures pack).
see goals for version 1.0

I also don't like the models and the atmoshpere (basically, created by sounds and models indeed) of OA, and I would love to have some good open replacements, but why start another project instead of submitting material to the OA team..
I wonder if someday will be possible to se a *completed* open project like this.

Hm, if you do not get QL to work, you should first try OpenArena as it's a "replacement" for Quake3.
Q3min is more a opensource replacement for Q3A in order to run unmodified Q3A mods. This means that there are not maps included with the package in the first place. They do have some nice DM and CTF maps on their homepage though.

That is indeed interesting. I always thought that OA doesn't really aim for 100% compatibility. Especially since there is at least one mod available in a special OA version and that is Excessive Plus. 100% compatibility to Q3A would be a nice plus though.

Well, what is interesting are those goals for 0.8
* The following weapons will be remodeled (old models will still appear in the attic):
* Gauntlet
* Shotgun
* Rocket Launcher
* Plasma Gun
* Chain Gun I wonder if someday will be possible to se a *completed* open project like this.
I guess OA can already be considered as *completed*. At least we can play a Q3A alike game for free. ![]()
All in all, I do not want to sound too arrogant or negative. Since I got Q3A from a friend (he doesn't play it anymore) all open-source alternatives are cool but not really a must-have. I only can say that Q3A feels more "beefy" and more "mean" than OA does. Esp. based on sound and environment.
Simply compare my two youtube videos on this when I play E+:

vs.

Unfortunately I do not have much to offer in order to change this.

OA is *far* from being completed, since its devs state this in the project goals itself.. if something is still a goal, it hasn't been realized yet ![]()
I agree with you with the different "feeling" between Q3a and OA: in this case, I think sounds and models make an HUGE difference here..
ps anyway, E+ works without issues with OA..

Nice to hear that OA isn't considered as finished.
I am not shure though if they will ever be able to provide that "original Q3A" feeling to me ![]()
Anyway, that's too much off-the-record. I also like the UT and UT3 anouncer a lot over Q3A (Double Kill-Ultrakill-Monsterkill-and so on). I guess if I had a darker voice and some good intonation I would offer the OA team to record at least some voice samples.
For the rest (models and ambient sounds) it requires peoples with other skills than those I can provide.
ps: E+ works without issues with OA ? Then why do those guys offer a OA specific version of it ? *confused*

anyway, does anyone is going to make a PKGBUILD for this version?

No, just kidding...I would do a PKGBUILD but
1) I never did so = zero knowledge
2) I somewhat short in sparetime
