Another system update, another failed to X server and it may partially be my fault. After running pacman -Syu, it listed a few things that were "no longer needed" so I decided to do some housekeeping and remove it. Those files were xbitmaps, xorg-server-utils and ladspa. Well, now X is broken.
When the computer starts up, it takes me to the terminal login prompt. And if I let it sit, the following message pops up
INIT Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
and when I try and start X manually, I get the following errors
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: miEmptyData

Did you try nvidia-beta from AUR?

No, I didn't. I figured the nvidia-173xx drivers were working and didn't want to mess with that.

For those that are keeping score, the problem has been resolved. I ended up replacing my drivers with xf86-video-nouveau and it fixed the issue.

I installed Arch 3 days back. It was a fresh install. Then did a system update via pacman -Syu and then installed xorg. After which i installed nvidia-96xx drivers along with nvidia-96xx-utils, did nvidia-xconfig and Xorg started just fine.
For some reason i wanted to do the same thing the following day and found that xorg would not start giving the same error as given by OP. When I changed the driver in DEVICE section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf from nvidia to vesa, xorg started fine with the vesa driver.
Eventually I found that on the first occassion the system upgrade had downloaded xorg-server-1.8.1.902 while the second upgrade had downloaded xorg-server-1.9. Obviously it was from a different mirror site that i had used this time.
In the end i solved the problem by installing the old version of xorg and using it with nvidia drivers (nvidia-96xx)

Have you tried downgrading xorg-server? The new 173xx drivers should arrive in the near future.

jazen@ : I had the same issue and Karol's advice in the above post worked for me, which I preferred to running nouveau. You may like to have a look at the following thread if you haven't already seen it :

Hi,
same problem here - updated Xorg to 1.9 -> Xorg won't start. After an hour long struggle I've managed to downgrade it back to 1.8.something (using "yaourt -Sd xorg" and a mirror in the Czech Republic) and everything is as it was before the upgrade. As I have nvidia5200FX, using nouveau is not an option for me. I just hope the 173xx drivers will be out soon.

You can use nouveau but the performance will drop.
Old packages can be found http://arm.konnichi.com/search/

I used to use the nvidia-96xx drivers until a couple months ago when xorg changes started causing problems. I was content with the open-source xf86-video-nv driver until a couple days ago when IT wouldn't work after an xorg upgrade. So now I completely reinstalled X and am simply running the xf86-video-vesa driver.
It works ok, I suppose...
Except for when I exit my desktop (fluxbox) and quit X......
All I get is a garbled screen and can't see the prompt.
(I can enter the commands to reboot and that'll reset my display... but it's a pain in the derriere.)

It's getting OT, but maybe you should try nouveau.
