Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hey. I'm having a problem with catalyst-test at the moment. Is not very serious, is just annoying. I wonder if anyone have a solution. I use xcompmgr and most of times I have this bugs in the image. Appear sometimes rectangles of the previous image I was on it. I didn't had this problem when I was using the catalyst 9.04. But still I think it's a problem with xcompmgr and not catalyst. I wonder if anyone has any solution to avoid this to happen.

edit: I notice is more frequently when I use chromium. weird.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

SOO glad I stumbled upon this topic!  I was using catalyst 10.9 for quite some time, and I've been having problems ever since then.  I was getting terrible tearing in video playback.  It was so distracting this morning that I couldn't concentrate on what I was watching (Boardwalk Empire) enough that I tried to find a fix.

catalyst-test (10.10) fixed everything for me.  vlc plays video back without a single tear !

I was also backed up on a couple days of updates (nothing was upgrading since I didn't add the xorg1.8 repo or switch to catalyst 10.10) so a bunch of other stuff got updated/fixed as well.  This has pretty much made my day, I have been dealing with tearing for far too long.

Almost forgot about what an awesome forum we've got here.  Thanks everyone!

I still do. What did you do? I'm using catalyst-test and xorg 1.9.

I have to disable hardware acceleration option for flash. but the tearing is awful

That's the thing, I didn't do anything special. However, try the following:

  • Boot into single user mode by appending '1' to the kernel line in Grub when you start the computer. It will ask you for the root password at some point and after it's entered correctly, it'll drop you into a root shell.

  • Delete the '/etc/ati/amdpcsdb' file.

  • Exit the root shell with ^D (Ctrl + D). It will continue booting and switch to level 5.

  • Log in, start Catalyst Control Center and move the 'Wait for vertical refresh' setting to 'Always On'.

  • Reboot and hope for the best. (Don't skip this step; I experience screen corruption with full screen flash right after enabling vertical sync until I reboot.)

Hey all, I have a FirePro V5800 I'm trying to get working in 64-bit Arch.  I've had no problems with using the Catalyst package from the AUR (using yaourt) for my Radeon cards, but my FirePro is another story.  The .run file from AMD won't run, of course, because it checks for what distro you're running and doesn't support Arch.  Anyone have recommendations for getting this guy up and running?

jck: Following hint helps not only with white/gray/black_artifacts:

If experiencing problems with white/gray/black_artifacts you can
[as root] kill Xserver and use this command:
# aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE

You are talking about .run file of firepro driver?
I've got PKGBUILD++ needed to build firepro-8.743.3.3 package here: http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/tarball … 3.3.tar.gz
It was uploaded <2 months ago, and i dunno if there's a newer version (simply because i have no firepro card, so i don't care that much wink), but if there is a newer version - try just to change pkgver in PKGBUILD.
#NOTE from PKGBUILD: before building please download firepro_8.743.3.3_linux_103646.zip using this site:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/f … linux.aspx
and move it next to this PKGBUILD
Edit: i've just downloaded newest firepro (8.773) driver and i can see there's no xserver 1.9 support, so as i wrote - download my PKGBUILD++ and change versions here and there and md5 sum, it should work fine.
Edit2: ah, you may also need some arch_compat patch if using newer kernels... easiest way to do this is to install package, and then edit /usr/share/ati/build_mod/kcl_ioctl.c file - change those lines:

void* ATI_API_CALL KCL_IOCTL_AllocUserSpace32(long size)
{
    return compat_alloc_user_space(size);
}

so it may looks like:

void* ATI_API_CALL KCL_IOCTL_AllocUserSpace32(long size)
{
    return arch_compat_alloc_user_space(size);
}

Really serious issue sad
On 4850 I don't have such problem, even more - i am surprised that catalyst-test is eating so little of RES:
- kde system's monitor is showing 30-45MB
- top/htop more, but around 130MB (much less when there's no windows opened)
It's also stable and very fast on kde 4.5.2.
I don't think it's matter of kwin's effects, but you can check my .kde4/share/config/kwinrc file here: http://hpaste.org/40454/kwinrc_catalyst

Can somebody please confirm agapito's problem (memory leaks)?
Right now we don't even know when exactly this issue appear - is it 5770 problem or whole 5xxx line problem or more.
Even if there will be no confirmation i think that filling a bug report should be done.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,

I have had problems with power management since catalyst 10.7 . It is not relating to kernel revision or xorg. On 10.6 all was ok. With 10.7 and higher I have problems like :

logs from Xorg.0.log
[ 16479.650] (EE) fglrx(0): PPLIB: PP_Initialize() failed.
[ 16479.650] (II) fglrx(0): Finished Initialize PPLIB!

I cant take information about gpu and temperature:

aticonfig --pplib-cmd "get activity"
PPLIB command execution has failed!
ati_pplib_cmd: execute "get" failed!

my system:
- arch linux x686.
- catalyst 10. ( 7 - 9 ) and 10 beta.

my graphic card:

fglrx(0): Chipset: "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600" (Chipset = 0x9581)
fglrx(0): (PciSubVendor = 0x1179, PciSubDevice = 0xff00)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I think our problem is plasma related. I resized folder plasmoid a few times and plasma-desktop procces went to 500 MB of RAM :S

EDIT: Every time I resize a windows xorg memory grow up! It happens without kwin effects too. I rebooted and i resized a windows for 10 minutes and now my X procces consumes 1 gig of RAM.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

it reminds me my own problem with memory leaks when simple moving kde's window around desktop was eating 10MB/sec, so it was able to eat 1gig of ram in < 2 minutes wink

Looks like some problem with clearing memory of rendered window (shooting in the dark, im not expert here).

It's clearly kwin (opengl) + catalyst problem, caused most probably by catalyst (i dont think a fact that kwin's dev works on nvidia's card got something to do with it).

@agapito: when you were testing raster engine with kcm-qt-graphicssystem did you noticed same memory leaks?

I think i have this problem since I bought my 5770 last december.

During last days i am using raster engine and this nasty bug still occurs. Only happens with KDE, with gnome or openbox all is correct.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I went from xf86-video-ati to catalyst-test + 1.9.0 today.  I have an ATI Radeon Mobility 5830.  Most everything seems fine; Extreme Tux Racer gets 200 FPS.  However, for some reason, my 2D performance is screwed.  I use xmonad, and when I switch workspaces or spawn new terminals -- anything that redraws the screen -- I get noticable lag and a CPU spike.  Before this was obviously instantaneous.

I tried installing the xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix package from the catalyst repo, with no improvement.  I also tried turning on XAA using aticonfig, as some folks suggest for various problems; also no improvement.  Nothing stands out as unusual in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.  Any ideas?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I finally had all the pieces for my htpc, thanks to Vi0l0 and all you folks that have contributed to the wiki\PKGBUILD making.
Using catalyst repo, catalyst-test installed without any issues.

Anyway I get some artifacts with vaapi decoding acceleration and XBMC, some small glitches, movements of the video, and so on. Sticking with software rendering for the moment.

Are there some xorg.conf settings recommended for a better vaapi experience? I didn't try mplayer yet anyway, only XBMC. I disabled compositing (since i don't need it) but it made no difference

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

catalyst-test and lib32-catalyst-utils-test packages have been updated in the [catalyst] repo and on the AUR.

Instead of ubuntu's version we are now using 10.10 RC1 from ati-forums.de

Changelog:
* Kernel module build fix for x86_64 kernels with security fix for CVE-2010-3081
* Generalized kernel module build fix for CVE-2010-3081 to work on RHEL and SLED/SUSE
* Ubuntu 10.10 early-look support (Xserver 1.9 support)
* Updated packaging scripts to support Ubuntu 10.10
* openSUSE 11.3 production support
* Fixed packaging scripts for SLED/SUSE
* Updated packaging scripts
* Checks for available video memory in CCC-LE before allowing to enable memory-intensive features
* Fixed Xserver segfaults and soft hangs when VT switching back to X
* Fixed missing CCC-LE icons in the System-Preferences menu
* Fixed corruption in Xinerama mode
* Fixed CCC-LE Gamma correction applied to wrong displays on openSUSE 11.3
* Fixed text corruption in Steam games
* Added missing maverick symlink in Ubuntu packaging script directory
* Fixed X version detection problems in installer, fixes installation on Fedora 11

Personally i don't see any difference tongue but it's slightly newer

Thanks for finding it out goes to FallenWizard.

I wasn't using XBMC for ages so i don't know hows vaapi support there, but mplayer-vaapi is pretty good, you should test it wink

I hope, this fixes the other text corruptions (for example in Telltale games) so I don't have to start the kernel with "notpat".

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I decided to upgrade catalyst - big mistake, now X crashes on start up. With nothing to lose, I decided to try catalyst-test so I could upgrade to xorg  1.9.0. This also segfaults on startup...

It looks like fglrx.ko is missing. It's not in the list of files when I run pacman -Ql catalyst-test. Hmm...
