[SOLVED] Can't run X as non-root user

I installed x as root and it works fine. However, when logged in as a non-root users, executing startx causes the screen to go black for maybe a second and then I'm taken back to a command prompt. Executing sudo startx works fine, just like root.

The non-root user has been added to all available groups (root, bin, daemon, sys, adm, disk, log, wheel) with wheel being the default group.

Any ideas?

SOLVED: I had an .xinitrc file in the non-root user's home directory that was completely commented out. I renamed it to .xinitrc_bak and tried again, and X started fine.
