CD Burning Issues

I have problems with my cd writer. I am unable to burn cds with all the popular cd applications - k3b(crashes when I hit burn, k3b detects my writer only when I'm superuser), xcdroast(produces an error cannot get SCSI I/O buffer), graveman (crashes as well). I haven't tried non-gui based programs but I guess the problem lies somewhere in the permission for the devices...I'm new to Arch Linux, I'm using 0.7 Wombat -Syu-ed today. Any ideas what is wrong?

Re: CD Burning Issues

Try using K3BSetup, it lets you set the permission on the drives. Also, add yourself to the optical group and change the K3B settings to use "optical" instead of "burning".

Re: CD Burning Issues

Hmm I had a problem with k3b not being able to unlock the drive.

I believe it was udev causing the gip. Try reinstalling udev too, if you're using it.

Re: CD Burning Issues

I already tried running k3b setup but I get this errror "Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed
kcmshell (kdelibs): WARNING: Could not find module 'k3bsetup2'."

Re: CD Burning Issues

I'm not using udev, but devfs, should I consider a switch to udev?

Yes. Try searching the forum for that error, it should turn up a couple of things that you might find helpful.

Re: CD Burning Issues

Surely that error isn't anything to do with devfs though?

Re: CD Burning Issues

I had tried all of your recommendations except to switch to udev which I'll do
soon because I'm kind of busy at the university these days...however I managed to burn a cd with cdrecord form the command line - worked like magic...btw I cannot find the k3setup module anywhere on my hard drive, I thought that the k3b installation was corrupted and reinstalled it but this didn't change the situation a bit. Any more ideas what should I do?

Re: CD Burning Issues

As I said previously k3b crashes when I hit the burn button. This problem is not resolved...

Re: CD Burning Issues

what kernel do you use?  I have issues with several kernels that crash the whole system when i try to use cdrecord as a user - it comes and goes tho with different kernel versions

Re: CD Burning Issues

Lord_bad - you should edit your last post and post a new thread about your clock

If you still have a copy see if you have the problem in 2.6.11.6-ARCH or earlier - it could just be an upstream bug in the kernel version - as i said, it's had me before

Re: CD Burning Issues

I'll live without gui applications for cd creation, after all my background is FreeBSD and back back there I was so used to burncd that I never used any other cd creation app... Perpaps this really is some kernel bug or it's something to do with devfs, i'll investigate the problem further myself.
