While playing videos mplayer often gets stuck on one frame for about 1-5 seconds with sound is going on smoothly and then catches up with playback. There is a lot of spare CPU and Memory at the moment of such freezes. I've tried to change videouts, some lavdopts( skiploopfilter and threads ) and that isn't helping at all. I've tried different kernels, stock and -ck and different builds of mplayer ( from extra, mplayer-mt, mplayer-system-libs ) .
This problem also shows itself with both ffmpeg codecs and binary dll ones. On both local and remote files.
At the same time, default setup of vlc plays everything smoothly and nicely.
Some pieces of additional information: I now have a dual-head Ati R9600 card with latest opensource drivers from extra, latest kernel from core and xorg 1.8.1

Have you tried cache?
$ mplayer -cache 8192 somefile.mkvOffline
Yes, I've tried to change cache size also. Neither increasing nor decreasing helped.

It seems that it happened because of pulseaudio's simultaneous output to two audio devices.

Every time I start to consider installing Pulse to my Arch system, I read something like this that reminds me why I haven't.
