gnome-terminal and konsole have no color support

The topic pretty much says it all, I have no colors in any terminal under X but color support is perfect in text mode. How can I enable color support in the X based terminals. I have used several distros up to now, have spend quite some time using freebsd but never had such  a problem...

Set this into your .bashrc

TERM=xterm-color
