I have a question - I did not have this problem before but for some reason I think that the reason sound is only coming out of my onboard audio is because its defaulting to the onboard - well the problem is that the onboard sucks. So I want it to default to the C-Media CMI8738. problem is its not working when I plug the speakers in it: I hear static but when I go to play music there is no sound. Can anyone help me try to get sound out of the c-media board? Sorry if this post is confusing - I typed this up rather fast.

Search the wiki for alsa. Read that, understand it, and you probably will have no more need for help. ONCE you've done that, come and ask for help again.
Hint: alsamixer

I have done alsamixer - I unmuted everything yet no sound comes out.

Did you google for it? I found the alsa wiki article on the card and it gives instructions. The fact that its so easy to find indicates you haven't taken that minimum effort yourself even.
Try that now, please.

I have a C-MEDIA card on my desktop (in particular, the 8770, the HT Omega Striker 7.1), and it flat out doesn't work with ALSA, so I had to settle with OSS. I would try looking to see if your card is supported by ALSA, and if not, try OSS.

You need to tell alsa to load your C-Media card as first sound device, then the onboard one as the second. If you're not interested in that, you could also simply disable the onboard audio, that way your problem simply goes away .
