pacman not upgrading (solved)

My harddrive died and i had to install a new one. I have (duke) 2005 archlinux cd. after installing I tried pacman -Syu and my pacman needed updating. So pacman -S pacman I download the files and get
error while reading package: unrecognized archive format: invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character.
error failed to commit transaction (libarchive error)
searching I found that it is because the compression went from gz to xz
so I tried to pacman xz and libarchive separately and get the same error.
finally I tried to get a new archlinux iso downloaded on a windows laptop burned to a disk and tried installing from cd, but can only get the duke archlinux starting up even using boot from cd.So I need to fix pacman to use it or find a way to use the files on the disk to extract and use them.

You seriously should just download a newer install CD.

Re: pacman not upgrading (solved)

I downloaded a iso image from the link on the installation wiki and booted from cd, but I still boot up from Duke. I followed the directions after burning to cd and verified the iso is on the cd. Is there another installation disk I should try

Where did you download from?  Get a release that is not five years old from http://www.archlinux.org/download/

Re: pacman not upgrading (solved)

I downloaded the archlinux-2009.02-core-i686  318meg from the bit torrent from archlinux.org and burned that to disk and followed the instructins from the official arch installation wiki but the disk did not boot, duke did. the file on the disk is archlinux-2009.02-core-i686.iso. and its all one file

So when you open the disk, there is one file on the disk "archlinux-2009.02-core-i686.iso"? If yes, that's faulty. An iso file is meant as an exact copy of the CD/DVD, which when burning unpacks all the files. You said you burned it using Windows, so you'll need to burn it using ISO Burner or a comparable program, after the burning process you should see a boot folder and a isomounts, overlay.sqfs and root-image.sqfs file.
