Merge unallocated space before Linux partition

Hey all,

So I had Windows 7 installed first on my HD, and installed Arch after. Somewhere along the line of installing Arch, I corrupted my Windows partition. Since I don't need Windows (and can just get it again when I go on winter break) I deleted the Windows partition. I want to merge the unallocated space to my Arch partition. Is this possible?

Here's a screen shot to visualize.

Re: Merge unallocated space before Linux partition

There is nothing to merge, just expand the Arch partition until it occupies the disk.

Re: Merge unallocated space before Linux partition

You can expand the partition either way - it doesn't matter if the unallocated space is 'before' or 'after' your linux partition.

Re: Merge unallocated space before Linux partition

So I'd have to get a live disk of say, gparted, unmount my Linux partition and then expand it? Is there a likelihood of losing my data?

The Parted Magic LiveCD is a good one for that task.  It has gparted on it, and your Linux partitions will be unmounted by default at boot time with the liveCD.

Re: Merge unallocated space before Linux partition

You're always advised to create a backup before attempting any such operation. I've never lost any data myself, but I do make backups anyway.
