When I maximize my window, I can see there is a white icon in the taskbar,
like a pair of wings, what does that mean? I also notice that when this icon appears,
modkey + space cannot toggle window layout anymore, why?

Do not use Linux as desktop.

It means the window is in floating mode, like most non-tiling WMs. It ignores layouts in that mode and can be moved around freely.

By default, Ctrl+ModKey+Space toggles the window's floating mode.
I've noticed that sometimes this does not work for some windows (f.e. handbrake), though.
He who says A doesn't have to say B. He can also recognize that A was false.
