Problem with graphics on startup

The thing is that for some days now at startup I get a message like this (not this one, I copied it from another thread, in this forum) :

 Unknown Hardware "HDA-intel" "Analog Devices AD1984A" "HBA:11d4194a,103c30e7,000100400 HDA:11c11040,103c1378,00100200" "0x103c" "0x30e7"

Hardware is initialized using a guess method

.

From what I manage to read, my problem is related to graphics, but all the same my hardware is initialised using a guest method. Then I get : starting KDE desktop manager     [FAIL]  and then comes login screen in an awful 640X480 resolution (my desktop too, when I log in).

So my two questions are :
1.Where can I find the error message (in order to be able to read it and post it).
2.Anyone had the same problem?

I should note that my monitor is a 32" Sony Bravia (normal resolution 1366X768)  that I used for more than six months, until this problem. Thanks in advance.

Re: Problem with graphics on startup

The first line of error is not graphics but ALSA related. Log in as root and try to run:

#alsaconf

Try to figure out what kind of graphics card do you use and if you have the correct driver installed and configured right.

Disable clearing of boot messages will help you (and us) identify what the actual errors are:

Re: Problem with graphics on startup

@skar : As I wrote in parenthesis in the OP, this was not my message, this was a similar one that I copied from another thread. Thanks for your proposal, anyway.

@jasonwryan : Thanks for the links. It appears that the poor resolution thing was cable related (tried another cable and works fine so far, hope this was the problem). However, your links are needed, because although the system works properly in resolution terms, the startup messages have not changed. I will try to copy and post.

Re: Problem with graphics on startup

Hi,

Dontr know if it 'll help you, it did help me (once)

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO885 … onfig.html

By the way, the resolution at start up may vary from your desktop's resolution. I had to fight with /ect/X11/xorg.conf...
The punchline is that X _can_ guess its way around, but I (personally) dont like it. It's like giving any ol' blonde your visa card...you never know where you'll end up...

What you may need to do is generate an xorg.conf. Enter root mode issue "X -configure" in the console and X will _then_ guess a config for you, it should be called xorg.conf.new (or something) and that can be used to tweak the X. Then, after all the tweaks are done, replace the old xorg.conf with the new one.

Tip: put your rig into init 3, tweak and then (at the console) issue "startx" after you put the test config in place...of course, back up the one you got now...

Wellness

Thor
EDIT : no problem, just hope it helps...
Come to think of it, you _may_ consider a VESA driver, not as good if you're into hi-preformance graphics, but it does work...if you need to make an xorg.conf for VESA and need an example, I'll gladly post you mine...

Re: Problem with graphics on startup

Well, I am back. Of course this was not cable related (would be too simple, wouldn't it?). In order to be more accurate the actual error message is

 Unknown Hardware : "HDA-Intel" "NvidiaMCP67 HDMI" "HDA : 10ec088,18491e01,00100001 HDA : 10de0067,00670000,00100000" "0x1849" "0x0888"

Hardware is initialized using a guess method

There follows the [FAIL] sign and then KDE Display Manager comes in with a [DONE], the login screen and the lousy resolution. I note that if I log in, I get the lousy resolution desktop (640X480, instead of 1366X768, losing part of my sidebar and panel).
Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed, while I study the posts above.
