I can't get any sound out of my headphones on a new install. I've tried suggestions in a number of similar forum threads, but no luck yet.
I'm testing with ordinary headphones plugged into the green jack at the back. Eventually I'd like to plug the monitor (with built-in speakers) there. I don't have any hdmi cable or other output possibilities. This is not a laptop. In fact it's an Intel DH57JG motherboard with 6 outputs on the back (black, blue, yellow, green, pink, digital) and 2 (green and pink) on the front. I test mostly with speaker-test, but also aplay /dev/random and playing a video with sound from time to time. Haven't heard anything from this machine yet.

I just got sound! I'm so happy. I did this:
rmmod snd-hda-intel
modprobe snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig
rmmod snd-hda-intel
modprobe snd-hda-intel model=intel-alc889a
and it worked.
Now I don't know whether loading the module with a bogus model followed by the right one is actually necessary. I thought I had already loaded the right model since I had a line
options snd-hda-intel model=intel-alc889a
in my /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf, but clearly not. I have now moved that line to the end of the file to see if it will make a difference on the next reboot...

Simply putting the "options" line after the "alias" lines in sound.conf worked on reboot.

Update: To get the headphone jack sense working, I additionally used the position_fix option.
So the line for sound.conf looks like:
options snd-hda-intel model=intel-alc889a position_fix=1

OK I thought the jack sense was working, but now it's not working again... stumped.

i suggest remove completely alsa.
it seems the support for this kind of chipset is not good by alsa
i solved my 5.1 audio issue installing and configuring oss instead of alsa.
just give a try, i suggest.
hope more support for intel-hda chipsets in the future by alsa

yes I agree
B U T
if you try oss you can exclude hardware issue
if using oss you got same issue then you know that it is not alsa config error but probably a kernel bug
if using oss you solved then you know that it is alsa error config
in first case then you can submit issue to kernel developers
in second case you can submit issue to alsa developers.
in my opinion it is alsa issue and there is no solution until alsa developers will not update all intel-hda chipset drivers
as possible try i suggest also compile from source latest build of alsa:
http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ … iwai/alsa/
good luck!!!!

I am now trying oss.
The jack sense does not work, but I got the message
oss_hdaudio: HDA codec 0x80862804 not known yet
on reboot.
But sound comes out of both my speakers and my headphones, and I can turn the speakers off (leaving only the headphones) with
ossmix codec1.jack.green.mode rear
(and turn it back with "front")
I'm not sure this is good enough to want to switch to xulrunner-oss etc. and become an OSS user though...
Anyway, now I would say my hardware is fine. (The jack sense ability, while not confirmed by oss, is confirmed by the few times it did work with alsa.)
