Hi,
my USB Stick which attends me everywhere stopped working. This happened when it was plugged into a Winows XP machine which freezed at some point. Now the stick doesn't show up in both Windows and Linux.

I've tried to format the drive using gparted but the programm doesn't stop "Scanning for all devices" as long as the stick is plugged in.
Any suggestions how to revive this stick?

Perhaps you can try lsusb to examine the details for the stick..if it shows up.
If you get a handle on the stick, dd could clean it up with /dev/zero. It has to be Id'd for that program to work.
Prediction...This year will be a very odd year!

The drive shows up in the first line (it's a SuperTalent Pico C 16 GB Drive)

I'm not familliar with the ld command. Just tried "sudo ld /dev/sdb" which makes the terminal hang until I pull out the stick. Would the syntax be right?

The command necessary to run and "clean" your stick is....
dd if=/dev/zero of= /dev/sd(x).... where (x) is your designator.
You may also try cfdisk on the device.....that is done with:
cfdisk /dev/sd(x)
Try the cfdisk first to examine the partitions and make a decision as to what to do next.

Checked both - the terminal hangs until i pull out the stick.

Be very certain of the device to be run with DD command!!!

Sure. It's "sdb" as it's visible from the output of dmesg in my first post.

If neither approach works, the device is history.

The stick has been replaced by the vendor. Thanks for your help :-)
