I'm not sure how to get a more verbose output from wicd-curses... all I get is "obtaining IP" then "not connected"
I have just installed broadcom-wl, which according to iwlist is being recognised. But it won't connect with either wpa or wep
What do I need to provide to be able to seek help? a log file from somewhere? let me know.

Did you set the password for the individual network using the right arrow and enable encryption?

Wicd log resides at /var/log/wicd/wicd.log, you should check it. But the problem is probably due to dhcpcd, dhclient or whatever you use. I have the same issue on my realtek card. Usually it goes smoothly with manual connection or with wicd on third or fourth trial (and then, I guess, it's cached, since the next time there is usually no problem with obtaining IP).
