I am sure you know or at least have heard of dropbox. I am essentially limited by the limited size I get on server (for free). So its not exactly an alternative that I am looking for. But here is what I want to do:
1. Set up a ftp / file server on my archbox.
2. Be able to access the shared files and download/upload stuff from anywhere using maybe a web browser (also OS independent access).
What are my best options for this and what exactly should I be looking at/for.
Thanks.

Have you already tried any of those http://alternativeto.net/software/dropbox/ ?
Gmail has about 8 GB but there's a filesize limit (you can split the files you upload) and it's not an ftp protocol.

I'll second using Gmail.. I wrote a simple script to compress all my source code into a single file and upload it to a gmail account I created. Not only do I have all my backups in one place, accessible from anywhere, but I also have a nice timeline of backups as well. Of course, these files are only 200-300k each, so size really isn't an issue for me, but 8GB is quite a bit.

I use a script w/ mailx-heirloom to e-mail my backups to my Gmail account and I use the Gmail filters and labels to automatically put all the backups in one place.
It's great for small text files, but no so good for multimedia. IIRC Google Docs allow you to upload bigger files, but they offer less space on the server.

You want to run all this on your own box right? Or did I misunderstand?
Assuming you have sufficient bandwidth on your net connection, just set up the services you need (ftp, http, etc) and forward the right ports on your router.

Hmm, not an ftp solution, but I guess Ubuntu One could be an alternative (?)

Thanks for your help folks. Will try vsftp + client and look into lsyncd. (I essentially didn't want to use a third party solution).
