fstab or mtab?

Hi all,

The HAL daemon keeps replacing entries in my /etc/fstab file.  Everytime I reconfigure my cdrom mpunt points from /dev/hdd to /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 and so on, the hal utility keeps rearranging it and makes a new entry pointing to /dev/hdd.

The result is that in gnome, then I open up Computer I have two entries for my DVD rom, 2 entries for my CD-Writer, floppy, etc.

My question is, how do you tame this HAL thing? Or am I suppose to forget it and just edit /etc/mtab?

mtab is a list of currently mounted filesystem and is created by the system so you shouldn't touch it.  To solve your problem you can (1) disable hal or (2) remove the dvd/cd/floppy lines from fstab and let hal handle them.

Making fstab read only may help too, but it may break hal...

silly hal - maybe you need to reconfigure hal instead of changing fstab (seeing as it seems to manage fstab for you)
