[SOLVED] iPod doesn't appear in /dev/ when plugged in

I've been trying to get my iPod touch to work, but I can't even find it inside /dev/. I'm supposed to be able to mount it manually if I see it as /dev/sdx# but I only see my hard drive's devices.

I know it is recognized by the system,
when I try lsusb, I get this line (among others):

Bus 001 Device 010: ID 05ac:1299 Apple, Inc.

also, with usb-devices I get the following:

T:  Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 10 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D:  Ver= 2.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs=  3
P:  Vendor=05ac ProdID=1299 Rev=00.01
S:  Manufacturer=Apple Inc.
S:  Product=iPod
S:  SerialNumber=2b032b9c4f73f37786c4fb2cf3a0e15bc75a0331
C:  #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr=500mA
I:  If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=06(still) Sub=01 Prot=01 Driver=(none)

I don't know if  the <<Driver=(none)>> part is normal here, I can mount/automount whatever other usb devices, like usb flash, or external hdd's, but not the iPod.

Any help would be very much appreciated smile

Try doing tail -f /var/log/everything and watch while plugging and unplugging it. You *should* get some information there. From there I would do (as root) blkid and see if you can get a UUID for the device. If so edit /etc/fstab accordingly. Good luck!

The ipod touch is not a mass storage device, that is why it is not showing up as a disk in /dev.

You need to use the ifuse package to mount an ipod touch.

Yup, ifuse will allow you to mount the Ipod straight from /dev/bus/usb.
Got my Ipod Touch working with gtkpod and ifuse a few weeks back.

Re: [SOLVED] iPod doesn't appear in /dev/ when plugged in

hey guys. I know this thread was "solved", but it didn't solve my problems.
I also got my ipod touch mounted using ifuse and was able to use gtkpod to transfer my files. However, since all of my files ended in .mp3, and the ipod didn't strip the extensions off, I decided to clear them from the ipod and start again.
In the middle of a sync I forgot about it, unplugged the ipod, and now ifuse gives me the message:

No device found, is it connected?
If it is make sure that your user has permissions to access the raw usb device.
If you're still having issues try unplugging the device and reconnecting it.

whenever I try to mount it.

I did the view-the-log thing, and when I plug it in I get this:
Oct 11 08:00:10 localhost usbmuxd[22304]: [2] Could not open device 1-4: -3

So it seems to be a problem with usbmuxd. Any ideas guys?

One more thing, I think I may have accidentally deleted some files from the ipod ("HashTable" comes to mind...), but I did a software update. Would that rebuild the filesystem?

Thanks.

Mmm.. well, two things come to my mind

1. You disconnected it while syncing, that may have damaged the iPod's file system.
2. About software updates, since I haven't updated my iPod, I don't know how much of a problem it could be to update it.

What I would do is return it to its factory state. There's a very well known procedure for this. Just look for it, there are several videos on YouTube. You are looking for a procedure involving pressing the buttons in several combinations for different periods of time...

Anyway, this is just a hint, look for this procedure for resetting to factory settings your iPod and see if this fixes it.

Re: [SOLVED] iPod doesn't appear in /dev/ when plugged in

Well, I wasn't able to find anything, but I might need to look harder.
I'd like to believe the problem is on my computer rather than my ipod, but, obviously, I could be wrong.
I'd appreciate any second opinions though.

[update: November 13] I did a reinstall recently. It's working now. Dunno why though. hmm I guess I was right and it was a problem with my computer, not the ipod.
