(SOLVED)File System repair - piece of cake

Hi,

I just survived a power-out, so did my "Lady", though I needed to give her a nudge or two...

I hope on everyone's patience for my "indulgence", but I'd like to "give" something back, instead of just asking-asking-asking...

Okay...

Upon reboot, the system forced a system check, and the check failed. In such a way that the system went to maintenance. Real bad...

Some simple steps to survive this

1) do not panic, breathe and "just do it"
2) the system will request the root password, supply it
3) it will have reported a partition to have errors, we'll repair that, example sda4, my home partition, your system will most definetly have reported some other partition...
4) enter init 1 mode by typing "init 1"...
5) unmount the partition that gave troubles, like so "umount /dev/sda4", again, your system would have reported annother partition, enter THAT...
6) enter "fsck -t ext3 /dev/sda4", I ommitted the "y" to see what was happening, but I had t hit the "y" several times, of course...
7) confirm on questions like "fix" and so
8) reboot, to do that enter (duh) "reboot"

This routine just saved my neck - I think I got everything still in order...

Now, it's saturday afternoon here (in Flanders) and it's time for coffee and a piece of ... cake
