I was wondering if there is a way to do this. I used pulseaudio for a while, but I'd rather not use it, as per-app volume control is the only reason I would use it, and it doesn't work as well in some aspects. I've got something setup with softvol, but that only lets me control programs not using ports (like mpd and timidity) and it isn't really per-app. I read about a patch at http://www.spinics.net/lists/alsa-devel/msg38124.html. Is there anything else that would work OK for individual apps (also, I'd rather not switch to oss either)?

I use pulseaudio myself. You'd have to measure the 'doesn't work well' aspects of pulseaudio against how much you want per-app volume control, which is quite tough to do on Alsa basic (didn't even think of softvol till you mentioned it, sounds very hacky). You could consider that even JACK doesn't natively have per-app volumes (but that's cos it works differently and the control isn't done by JACK itself).
