weird kernel and apps mess!!

I have 4 kernels installed on my system , -stock,-ck,-ice,-pf. I have Xorg 1.9 installed. When I startx in stock and pf , Xorg 1.9 starts whereas in ck and ice Xorg 1.8 RC 2 starts , i know that kernel and apps are completely independent , i have asked for this problem in the IRC , and others have verified the xorg logs to make sure that i m not drunk...
Another peculiar problem is that installing say wgetpaste in ck , doesn't show up in say pf . pacman -Qs in pf still shows wgetpaste installed , but it simple doesn't execute on pf . very weird!!!! plz crank up your grey matter and help me out in this matter

did you check your menu.lst?

you dont have more than one root partition lying around right?

yeah i have double checked menu.lst , i have only one root partition .
