I have some dogs in my home that I would like to watch from work via a few USB Logitech web camera's I have and someone told me to check out the program ZoneMinder. Has anyone ever used or had any experience using this on any Linux system including Arch Linux?

Funny to see your post here as I just started messing with ZoneMinder earlier this week and was looking to find other Archers' experiences with it. I tried a live cd from the ZoneMinder forums, ZMlarch, which is an Arch based project. I got it working with a Panasonic WV-NF302 in all of 20 minutes. The problem with this particular live cd is that I can't seem to find one that is current. It looks like the fellow couldn't keep up with the hosting demands and nobody took over.
The main issue I ran into, and I'm sure this could be resolved with some effort, is that he included Shaman. I ran into some issues trying to update everything and at this point I think it may be easier and cleaner to just clean install Arch and grab ZoneMinder from AUR. I'm very impressed with the package as whole though. I had initially began a project at work just using the built in software with a Synology NAS device. It looks pretty, but you pretty much need to use Internet Explorer in order to get all of the functionality out of it. And that's with Synology's brand new v3.0 software they just released within the last two weeks! Who the heck requires IE these days?!? Especially when it's something security oriented.

Did you use a USB or IP based camera?

I'm using IP based Panasonic cams. So far I've only deployed two, but we plan on setting up probably another eight to ten.

I just have cheap-o USB Logitech cameras that I wanted to use to keep an eye on the dogs while I am at work. I don't know if the USB camera's I have will even work or be recognized.

It's hard to say. I found out about ZoneMinder from a fellow I work with. He's running it at his house with four analog cameras that all eventually plug into an analog capture card. I would think that if the USB camera you have is supported under V4L, that it will probably work.

Well I'm having a pretty difficult time getting the ZoneMinder64 package from AUR to compile. I've found a few problems with the PKGBUILD that I was able to fix on my own, but still more that I cannot. It's the only ZoneMinder package that is not orphaned and seems to be the only one at all that supports x86_64. If you give it a shot I'd be interested in knowing how it goes.

I finally got ZoneMinder to compile. But it was a short celebration. I then spent the next few days trying to get it to work under Arch with no success. I'm afraid my (previous) lack of any MySQL experience was my downfall. I eventually downloaded and installed a live image that a ZoneMinder forum member is offering for download. It's based on Ubuntu server 10.10. It installed and sure enough it fired right up. Unfortunately it wouldn't work for more than about 2 hours before completely locking up the entire machine. So I was left without much choice but to give up on ZoneMinder and resorted to using the app built in to the Synology DS410.
