Can't run office 2003 with wine

Hi guys !

The onley thing that stops me from migrating to arch is the microsoft office suite

I've tried to install Microsof office 2003 with wine , it installed fine but when i try run it i get a message "Office has not been installed for this current user"

What can i do to have it run properly ? Openoffice is good but it doesn't open .doc files properly or powerpoint files

Thanks for your help !

Re: Can't run office 2003 with wine

OK a strange thing has just happened . After getting the above message i decided to remove office and install it again .

After removing it i went to /home/.wine/Program Files/office etc and noticed that the files were still there . Why is that ?

So i've tried to open the file again , because it was weird that the files were still there . After running it again , it open up just fine although some characters don't display well or are misplaced.

However it ran fine and i don't know why ? And this makes me wonder why

Will it be better if i install office 2007?

Office 2007 worked great with Crossover 7.1 from 2 years ago so wine should have caught up by now.
An alternative way could be setting Virtualbox since you already own a windows license.

You sure? That's what I was thinking about, too, but the go-openoffice is 99% compatible with those two, imo.
The thing is, my professor at uni tried to open his ppt two days ago. The text was scattered around, but he swore that all of that looked correct on his PC (his M$ Office). So don't worry about that super compatibility, cause even windows with windows doesn't have it. You use 2003, someone else 2007, and there are the problems. They shouldn't be there. They pay for the working application. Many $$$: big_smile

I've tried the go-openoffice suite but in powerpoint (impress) the mathematical symbols don't appear . Instead it shows a questionamark . Is there a way to solve this ?
