problem while installing arch linux in separate partition

Hi, I am trying to install arch linux from cd so when it comes to prepare hard drive, i choose manually because already I am having  windows 7 in one partition and having 200gb free space. so i am trying to install it in free space but after selecting partition hard drives, its showing like 'dev/sda      450784 MB (450GB)' it means its showing my entire hard drive. I am unable see my partitions and free space. kindly anyone guide me in partition part, and my system supports 64 bit , shall i install dual or only 64 bit arch linux?

thanks

Re: problem while installing arch linux in separate partition

You haven't described your problems correctly. Do you have two separate partitions, or one? It's firstly showing "/dev/sda" cause that's the disk you should choose to go to the disk partition tool (cfdisk I think...). How you described I realize that you're actually having one partition where win7 is. And that you have 200GB of free space on it. You should then use some partition tool (other than cfdisk) to tear apart that one partition, and then come back to /arch/setup.
Ask further if you need anything, but be more precise! smile

Re: problem while installing arch linux in separate partition

apologies for that.....

windows 7        boot          NTFS                 65.45GB
ashwin             primary      NTFS                 200GB
free space                                                   200GB

so here ,I want to install arch linux on free space.......so what should i do after selecting manually partition drives? because after selecting it, it showing my entire hard drive of 465 GB, so i am little bit scared of losing data if i click dev/sda partition.

Re: problem while installing arch linux in separate partition

ashvin,

at the beginning partition on the command line can be confusing.

I suggest you prepare the partition with the livecd gparted, which is graphical and very explicit.

You can get the Live CD from:

While you are at it you can also make a small 1 or 2 GB swap partitition.

Re: problem while installing arch linux in separate partition

may be you are in the stage of device selection

and you have to choose this drive because it's the only one.

and than you will see the partitions.

nothing will happen until you approve all the chnges to the partitions

so you can safly choose it.
