slim and xfce4

I can't seem to find the answer to this yet. When I log using slim I get the message "Failed to execute Login Command".
I edited /etc/inittab to boot to X11 and use slim, which it does just fine. I also edited ~/.xinitrc so that everything is commented out except "exec xfce4-session".
The defualt line in my .xinitrc was "exec startxfce4" but that didn't work so I changed it to "xfce4-session" which also isn't working. xinitrc is executable as well. So can anybody help me out here?

thanks

Re: slim and xfce4

Try removing your slim lock file:

rm /var/lock/slim.lock

and the correct entry for ~/.xinitrc should be:

#!/bin/sh

#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#

exec startxfce4

Also check '/var/log/slim.log' for any useful information.

Re: slim and xfce4

Copy the xinitrc from Xfce itself that's in /usr/share/ somewhere.

Either you select your session every single time you log in (so you can pick the DE/WM you want) or you edit slim's configuration file so you don't need to select a session upon login.

Re: slim and xfce4

Its not actually necessary to edit /etc/slim.conf to select your session as this is handled by the login command:

login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session

which enables you to set different sessions via ~/.xinitrc. You can comment out the above and run a session using:

sessions openbox,xfce4,icewm,wmaker

the first one is the default, but once you have ~/.xinitrc set up correctly 'login_cmd' handles everything without the need to edit 'slim.conf'.

I did
rm /var/lock/slim.lock

and changed it back to "startxfce4"

but when I rebooted it still gives the same message and it regenerated a new slim.lock file

the only xinitrc's I could find where:
/etc/skel/.xinitrc
~/.xinitrc
/etc/X11/'something'/xinitrc

none in /usr/share

Re: slim and xfce4

I am also having this problem after running 'pacman -Syu' for the first time I'd booted my Arch box in maybe a month. I did discover the recent change to kernel modesetting (KMS) and managed to get that working apparently fine, but still the same issue as joey0 described. I am at least getting to the SLIM login screen without an xorg.conf, so I think that means I should be fine re: any Xorg issues...?

I removed my /var/log/slim.log and rebooted, came up to the SLIM login screen and tried to log in as usual, which failed, producing the following slim.log, but I'm not sure what's important here:

joey0: Could you check (/var/log/slim.log) if you have the same problem as SubGothius? The important line is

Fatal server error:
exaGetPixmapFirstPixel called for invalid bpp 1

SubGothius: Please paste your Xorg log file

Re: slim and xfce4

Is that the xorg logfile corresponding to the slim logfile you posted earlier? I expected to see more information regarding the crash, instead there is nothing there.

The latest xorg server has caused problems for a number of people with ATI graphics cards and KMS enabled. You could try to disable it. The quickest way is to add nomodeset to the kernel line in grub's menu.lst.

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

Re: slim and xfce4

Yes, that's the Xorg.0.log corresponding to the slim.log; although I took it from a subsequent boot, the slim.log in that instance is identical to what I posted earlier.

I don't think Xorg itself is the problem anyway, as I do get up to the SLiM graphical login screen at boot. Also, I just tried a console-only boot (runlevel 3 from grub), logged in as root and ran 'startxfce4' from a console, which brought up an XFCE4 desktop just fine.  However, doing the same from my regular user account kept producing the same problem behavior as before.

Re: slim and xfce4

Aha, my problem seems to be a matter of bad xfwm4 themes.

I deleted (actually mv'd) my ~/.config/xfce4 directory, and now SLiM lets me log into a pristine default XFCE4 desktop (which of course generates a new ~/.config/xfce4). As I was trying to get my old appearance settings back, I found at least a couple xfwm4 themes -- one was a custom download, Elegant Brit, the other was Wildbush, apparently part of the xfwm-themes package -- which crashed X as soon as I selected them. I had to redelete my new ~/.config/xfce4 to start over fresh in order to get an X desktop working again with this login.

EDIT: specified which particular themes caused X to crash.

Re: slim and xfce4

FWIW, the problem with affected Xfwm themes crashing X appears to be due to a new bug in Xorg:

Re: slim and xfce4

Actually this bug still exists today in xorg-server 1.7.6-3.

With the open source ati driver I ran into this problem with a xfwm4 theme that contains 1x1 pixmaps with one color. Disabling HWAccel (=disabling exa I think) it worked...
With other themes HWAccel worked.
