dibblethewrecker, the error logs here(both -tng package are lastest)
When reboot my computer :

/etc/rc.d/function: line188 :lib/splash/cache/progress_track :no such file or directory
And there are same messages at boot time.
regular initscripts-gensplash work well.

are you using the gensplash-tng package too? the problem is that the ramfs is not being created and it can't write to the unmounted fs
make sure you have both the latest gensplash-tng and initscripts-gensplash-tng

*YAWN* - you could try debian stable - i think that is devoid of anything even remotely gimmicky!

gensplash has now officially migrated to the new version using the daemon - can the people who were having problems with gensplash-tng revert to the normal gensplash (which is now the same) and continue to post their issues, please.
i may have made some fixes that i forgot about
hope you all enjoy it - i have a bit more work to do then I will have boot messages working
I'm going to add a new page on the wiki to explain how it all works

hi dib,
installed the new packages today: gensplashutils 1.1.9.3-6, initscripts-gensplash 0.9.3-5, miscsplashutils 0.1.3-2
this time round:
* silent mode not working
* verbose mode fails to start daemons
fix:
* edit /etc/rc.d/functions: change "spl_cachedir" to something sensible like: /var/cache/splash/
* edit /sbin/splash: chage "spl_chachedir" as in /etc/rc.d/functions and change "spl_tmpdir" to something like "/var/tmp/splash/"
todo:
* could you fix the "/etc/rc.multi" script so that it still runs when something is wrong with /sbin/splash?
anyway, i do have verbose mode is working now and rc.multi no longer crashes. thanks for your continuous efforts,
jw

.: EDITED - was in a rush before :.
ok - people are reporting bugs for this and i am doing my best to address them.
spl_cachedir
jw the location of spl_cachedir is hard coded so i can't see how your fix will help - it is also the reason it is in a less "sensible" place - i take a small amount of offense that you think I choose to put it there!
besides, placing it in /var won't work for everyone cos people may not have var mounted then (so the gentoo theory goes)
the gensplash dev, and therefore gentoo, do it this way and we do it that way too to maintain transparency between that project and this project
i can't fix this without more better information so can you guys try to be a bit more specific - i know capturing the error messages is difficult. As i don't have access to your systems - you'll have to troubleshoot a bit yourselves for me to be able to help.
jw, i'll check rc.multi out
i'll also review all the scripts for glaring errors
thanks for your continuing feedback and support - as you can see i am trying!

NEW VERSION RELEASED!
the scripts don't actually create the dirs you need - dunno how this slipped under the radar:
mkdir -p /lib/splash/{cache,tmp}
if this is not it it MUST be something like this - or it wouldn't work for me!
fixes have been made so please all upgrade and report again! thank god for pacman, eh?!

The new version work well without any error
Thank you !

I just tried this for the first time, I'm not getting any errors at all, but it's just not working I patched vanilla 2.6.11.7 sources with cko1 which has fbsplash 0.9.1. It all compiled nicely, I installed gensplashutils, initscripts-gensplash and miscsplashutils. They all installed fine, my kernel line is
kernel /kernel root=/dev/hda3 video=vesafb:ywrap,pmipal,1024x768-16@60 splash=verbose,theme:ArchMetal console=tty1
No errors during boot, it pauses just after the UDev line (which is where it gave an error before due to my typo) but keeps plowing forwards, no errors but no splash image either. So I log in as root and run /etc/rc.d/gensplash start, says done but still no images. Here's the output of cat /var/log/kernel.log | grep fbsplash
Apr 26 23:27:22 sylvester fbsplash: verbose
Apr 26 23:27:22 sylvester fbsplash: theme ArchMetal
Apr 26 23:27:22 sylvester fbsplash: console 0 using theme 'ArchMetal'
Apr 26 23:29:06 sylvester fbsplash: console 0 using theme 'ArchMetal'
Apr 26 23:29:06 sylvester fbsplash: console 1 using theme 'ArchMetal'
Apr 26 23:29:06 sylvester fbsplash: console 2 using theme 'ArchMetal'
Apr 26 23:29:06 sylvester fbsplash: console 3 using theme 'ArchMetal'
Apr 26 23:29:06 sylvester fbsplash: console 4 using theme 'ArchMetal'
Apr 26 23:29:06 sylvester fbsplash: console 5 using theme 'ArchMetal'
Not sure what other info to pass on, /proc/fbsplash is there like it's supposed to be, any ideas on where I screwed up?

Did you create the initramfs image with splash_geninitramfs (=> Wiki)?
And do you have initrd section pointing to that image in /boot/grub/menu.lst, below the kernel line?
Offline
Gensplash no worky for Shadowhand. I think I have bad luck or something. Today I tried to get it to work again, and ended up with "VFS: couldn't mount root blah blah blah".
Maybe the wiki needs updating?

Actually, the last release is the first which seems to work flawlessly here since the introduction of new gensplash structure (except silent mode, but I guess it's a known issue).
This error looks like a borked menu.lst to me O_o
Offline
Nah I don't have the initrd image but that's just for pre-rc.d/gensplash isn't it? My grub installation is screwed atm, I'm loading my kernel from the grub commandline and manually booting until I get a free second to sort out what went wrong but yeah, it shoudl still work later on in the same without the initrd shouldn't it?
Offline
Yhm, if it doesn't work without initrd, just fix the grub and try with initrd ;-)
Thinking logically it ought to work without initrd, but it seems gensplash structure got a bit complicated recently. I guess you'd have to wait for dibble to answer that :-)
Offline
lucke - did you say silent isn't working? It should all work perfectly now!
miracle - WHOOPS! my bad!
shadowhand - we can't help unless you give us some errors! your grub/lilo might help
2.6.11.7 sources with cko1 which has fbsplash 0.9.1
the -cko patchset AFAIK is for vanilla 2.6.11 only, it might have built ok but i don't think that is any guarantee it will work
AFAIK you DON'T need the initrd to check it works - if your framebuffer is working correctly you should still be able to use the rc.d script to set your backgrounds
Offline
dibble, silent doesn't seem to work here. It just prints the silent screen and then goes on with verbose boot process (with that printed silent screen disappearing gradually from the sight due to scrolling).
It might be because of vesafb-tng though (as I have indicated possible problems with it some time ago - but verbose didn't work then either).
Offline
I'll give it a go with 2.6.11 then see what I get, but if it's not giving any errors and it doesn't when I fuck up with a typo or soemthing and I'm getting output from fbsplash when I run rc.d/gensplash so shouldn't that indicate that it's working?

Hi,
This gensplash thing is very cool, but not working well for me.
I have two problems:
(1). When I change splash kernel option from verbose to silent, I get just black background and no pictures, jus text like it would not be any splash.
(2). When I install initscripts-gensplash package I get loads of /usr/bin/fgconsole not found errors (wich I AM SURE it is there). And spalsh comes up only after some time, when init starts.
Any help? :?:
PS.:
I am using gensplashutils 1.1.9.3-7 and initscripts-gensplash 0.9.3-5.

i can see you are all having a few issues
lucke - your problem i think is that you need to use the quiet option on your grub kernel line
can everyone else please triple check the bootloader examples in /etc/splash
Dalius, hmm, that fgconsole error is a bit odd - can you do a
which fgconsole
and paste your result
Offline
Hello, dibble.
Results from wich fgconsole:
/usr/bin/fgconsole
I know it is there as supposed to be. I am also getting wc not found errors from /sbin/saplash itself, and I am sure it is in my /usr/bin, where it supposed to be.
Strange... :?
Anyways, I just got silent mode to work. But there is another problem: when gensplash script is run by init, it does not set vc backgrounds as supposed to (I see gensplash only in vc1, but not vc2, vc3, etc...), but when I login as a user and type
sudo /etc/rc.d/gensplash start
it does things beutifully.
And yes I added gensplash to /etc/rc.conf, and I even can see it started in verbose boot mode, even without an error, but it still does nothing.

(not too mention annoying comments from my girlfriend)
Impressive. I thought if one fights the candy war like you do, he has propably no partnership and plenty of time.
Just to be sure that we both use the word girlfriend in the same meaning: no fish, cat and dog or other pets, and no plants. Even the old, intimate pizza box next to your right is not really a girl friend. Still have one? Congratulations!
Please forgive me, could't resist. With love from
