My solution for crappy searchboxes is a Firefox or Midori bookmark with this url:
javascript:void(location.href='http://www.google.com/search?as_q=%s&num=10&btnG=%s&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&cr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch='+location.href.split(%22/%22)[2]+'&as_rights=&safe=off')
and some keyword, such as 'h:'
then type "h: some words" in the location to search the current site only.

Do we really need a forum search?
Yes, we really need a forum search.
Functionality is all in the willingness to try multiple keywords, using the correct modifiers, wildcard symbols, etc.
I can't tell you how much help and guidance I have found without the need to post, simply because of the search function.
If I have a complaint, it's the 30 second wait requirement if an attempt turns up empty.
(my 2 cents)

in either case search help is necessary to document syntax, *especially* since there are penalties here for getting a search string wrong (forced delays before users can correct their mistakes). for example, are multiple space separated words in the search box treated as AND or OR? and how to perform the reverse? and how to group terms for logical expressions? there are many search engines with a variety of syntax - each needs to be documented at the point of use.

If you have any qualms with the forum software documentation, please take them upstream. We just use vanilla fluxbb, so whatever their search defaults are, ours are.
Also, please don't bump really old topics unless you have something really constructive to add..
