KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

Hello

I'm having this strange problem since I use KDE 4.5.2; if Kwin desktop effects would be enabled (OpenGL), KDE shuts down immediately when I click on a minimized window in taskbar no matter what I do.

First I had this problem in Kubuntu 10.10 and then in Arch (after upgrading KDE), the difference is, in Arch I get this error on screen that probably helps solve the problem or at least find out its origination!

Here is the screenshot:

Some information that may help:
Xorg version: 1.9
VGA: ATI Radeon HD 5870
VGA Driver: catalyst-test 10.10-999 from AUR

Thanks in advance for your help...

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

The contents of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file (after the crash) would be of interest here. It looks like what happens here is X crashes so KDE cleans itself up because it can't find the display server anymore. This shouldn't be all that surprising with a beta-quality driver.

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

Thank you for your reply.

I just upgraded Arch (# powerpill -Syu) and along by that KDE also got updated to 4.5.2-2 from 4.5.2-1, but nothing changed, probably got worse; Plasma workspace crashes, screen flickers and background goes black frequently for about 2 minutes after I log in, even if Kwin effects are disabled or enabled via XRenderer.

I said I had the same problem in Kubuntu Maverick where I let Kubuntu download and install ATI proprietary drivers. Are they considered beta also?

Anyways, here is another screenshot after KDE gets killed!:

I think it's more related to Xorg 1.9 or KDE 4.5.2 than the driver (based on my experience with Kubuntu).

This problem forces me to use Gnome for the moment and I'm really upset!

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

I have the same problem with catalyst-test ( crash when maximizing from taskbar ). My Xorg.0.log looks exactly the same. Would the catalyst package be a better option instead of catalyst-test ? I have some other trouble with the open-source ati driver.

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

Now I see, catalyst-test is based on Ubuntu's 10.10 ATI proprietary driver, and this fact that I had problem with Kubuntu too shows that driver is the cause.

I think we have no choice but waiting till ATI releases catalyst 10.10, or downgrade Xorg.

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

At first glance the problem seems fixed with the new catalyst 10.10 driver.

EDIT:

Never mind, it worked for a while but the crash occurs again.

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

Yeah, this definitely looks like a driver issue from the log you've posted. Try it with an open-source driver and see if you get the same crash. Right now your options are as stated to downgrade X so that catalyst stable works or use an open-source driver. The r300g driver is really good if you haven't tried it already.

Oh, also, please make sure you send a bug report to ATI so they can correct the problem.

Yeah, unfortunately same here. The minimize maximize problem is gone but Plasma workspace crashes continuously.

I'll definitely try that out, the problem is open-source drivers aren't able to automatically down-clock the GPU and decrease the fan speed (=noise).

Sure.

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

I have exactly the same problem. It's not every time, but, sometimes, randomly, when clicking things in taskbar X11 segfaults and kde shuts down, with an error looking very similar. It also occurs sometimes when typing things into the Firefox address bar. It'll happen once randomly, and then thereafter, until reboot, typing the same string into the FF address bar causes the fault. Cool.
My graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1650. The idea that it's an ATI graphics driver problem makes sense. This did not occur before I updated X.
r300g, you say? Let's give this a go.

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

Ah! No need for fancy extra drivers - disabling desktop effects and compositing entirely fixed this problem for me. The downside is no more pretty wobbly windows. I'm sure I'll survive.

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

I have the same problem, I use the free radeon driver without KMS, my graphics card is ATI x1200 and use KDE 4.5.2, the file / var / log / errors appears:

localhost kdm [1573]: X server for display: 0 terminated unexpectedly

It is a very annoying problem, but disabling the graphical effects is solved

Re: KDE shuts down when I click on a minimized window in taskbar!

Now we can conclude the real cause of problom is X 1.9 or KDE 4.5.2, X is much more probable.

From the first day of its release, X 1.9 has had all kinds of bugs and problems. We Persian users first had a very big problem with keyboard layout and language. Now this annoying and intolerable bug.
