Slim Login Manager problem. I think

Hi everyone!!!

After installing Arch for about a week :-), i have finally done it. So after few days wondering around and getting to know terminal i decided to install lxde to see how it looks. After installing everything accordingly with Arch wiki, system boots up to the moment when i need to type in user name and password in slim. After pressing enter no error message or anything just the background goes black and then is back again asking for user name and password.

Thank you for all help!!

All The Best!!!

Did you configure your .xinitrc file ?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … Guide#LXDE
Did you configre /etc/slim.conf ? Comment out these lines or replace with lxde.

# Available sessions (first one is the default).
# The current chosen session name is replaced in the login_cmd
# above, so your login command can handle different sessions.
# see the xinitrc.sample file shipped with slim sources
#sessions xfce4,icewm,wmaker,blackbox

Re: Slim Login Manager problem. I think

Hi! Have you followed SLiM Wiki page?

Maybe you haven't set your .xinitrc?

To be able to log in into  your environment (lxde), when in GRUB edit your booting line (pressing e), and add at the end of the line number 3. Then press ctrl+x (i guess, i'm not sure, GRUB will tell you; have a look at GRUB Wiki page). After logging in, you'll be in the tty1, there you can startx to see if you can load DE. If not, than edit ~/.xinitrc.

Good luck!

Re: Slim Login Manager problem. I think

This may be of help

Have you made any changes to inittab recently? To change runlevels or anything of the sort?

These two pages should give you a good summary of what is likely causing this error:

http://www.unixguide.net/linux/faq/09.24.shtml
http://www.netadmintools.com/html/5inittab.man.html

If all else fails, i'd reinstall and start again .... I'm a newbie to Archlinux & i just love it ...

Good luck

Superb!!!

Thanks a lot for all help!!!!!!
I will have a look. Probably start from scratch again

I'm a arch virgin as well. It took me a week to finally install it properly. I love it. Spending about 8 hours a day on it. Some at work :-))

All take care!!
