What will a better ATI driver do?

Hi Archers-

I have a simple newbie question. I read this thread:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … n+mobility

and I would like to know what are the benefits of installing a ATI Radeon driver for my ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 graphic card? I'm currently using fluxbox to run my applications (xmms, openoffice, firefox, etc.) and I've seen in my xorg.conf that there's some kind of ATI generic driver for my card.

What will change if I install a new driver? For example, will it fix the blurry blue (not to be confounded with blueberry :? ) fonts in Google search results when I use Firefox?

Thanks. I know there are no stupid questions here wink

Re: What will a better ATI driver do?

Those non-generic ati/nvidia drivers are usually used only to enable the 3d acceleration. If you don't need it, generic xorg's drivers should be sufficient for you.

But well, they could fix the problem for you. Or make things even worse ;-) There's no obvious answer to that, you'd have to try and see for yourself. On the other hand, it seems ati drivers aren't that easy to install (I can't really say, I'm a nvidia user).

Thanks a lot!

I'll stick to my generic driver for the moment.

better driver = better performance...

if you're having rendering issues (i.e. the blurry blue fonts) then I'd suggest trying to install the better drivers.

Being the noob that I am, could someone explain how to instal new/better drivers for an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000?
