Piping conky/dzen into Awesome status bar
Does anyone have any idea how to do this? I'd just like some simple notifications of battery status and volume.
I've had no luck at all with awesome's widgets.

1) Try obvious widgets - they're more or less drop-in.
2) Have you read the Vicious README? It explains the syntax used by vicious, provides the necessary details for all vicious bases, and even gives a couple examples.
3) Have you looked at other users' configs (like mine 
)? Many have implemented interesting uses of vicious widgets you can learn from.
To (badly) paraphrase anxrc, vicious' base is more about providing data - it's up to you to format and display the data.
