When I delete some message from my account in Thunderbird (in program), it doesn't seem to make ~/.thunderbird/ dir smaller... So I guess deleting message in program doesn't delete it for real? It's like Thunderbird just marks a message as deleted. Why? I dont' have infinite HDD.

When you first delete the message, it is moved into the Trash folder. Once you have deleted the message from the Trash folder, you can run File -> Compact Folders to compress the mail data.

I haven't used Thunderbird in quite a while but there used to be a Compact option under the File menu which permanently deleted messages.

So "Compact Folders" deletes deleted messages? Or it compresses mail? I just wanna make it clear to me.
P. S. I have Trash folder configured to clear itself automatically upon exit.

Deleting messages just flags them as deleted. Compacting the folder actually removes those messages from the file.
