that's 20 new packages, which, far as I can tell from the description, shouldn't really be required.(?) are these necessary? seems kind of un-archlike to me.

xorg-apps has been split into individual packages. It's ok to install those packages. I did at least.

Note the dependencies and the verbiage of the description. If you were really curious, they've been discussing this on the arch-dev-public mailing list for a while.
