Currently (1.9) it definitely reads both xorg.conf and xorg.conf.d/* files

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

So what is the best setup for fglrx as far as HD playback goes?  I have a 4870x2 with the latest Catalyst and I've always had tearing problems as well as this horizontal line artifact (I guess a horizontal sync problem?).

Some of them quite some time ago, however I looked over the wiki again last night.  If I force Vsync via amdcccle>3d>always use vsync I don't gear tearing, however videos lag.  I tested a 480P It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode and it even lagged on that.  I'm not talking about barely noticeable lag, I mean single digit FPS.  I tried disabling compositing as well.

I'll try some more things out as time permits.  I use VLC with pretty much the defaults, though trying different video renderers didn't seem to help.  xvfb is installed as well, so I need to test that.

I love Linux and all, but damn Windows is so much better (or at least easier) to manage HD video playback.  I mostly boot to windows for gaming, but I also boot it to watch movies due to the following:

SPDIF DTS or AC3 instability.  It will work for some time, but the bitstream will just crash and I lose the DTS/Dolby signal on my receiver, then I have to switch back to sterero.  Using a Front Channels (stereo mixer) and outputting as PCM via digital coax works fine though.  As we all know this doesn't give the best cinema experience....

Video quality in general.  With EVR in Windows everything works great, with the best picture quality in MPC-HC.

I'm sure it is possible to match this in Linux, it's just going to take some extra work in the case of my hardware.  For instance I have been meaning to patch to the latest alsa snapshot, since supposedly it fixes the passthrough problem.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

So far I've fixed the tearing problem I think.  I'm currently watching a 720P video of Battlestar Galactica Miniseries S01E01-2 without any tearing.  I have higher bitrate 1080P mkvs of the rest of the show so that will be the real test, as this 720P is the TV rip and of very poor color quality.

uninstalled smplayer-svn
install smplayer 0.6.9-2 from extra
set output driver to xv (0 - ATI Radeon AVIVO Video)

a note on this, I don't see xvba, though I have it installed.  No tearing present, so it won't be needed unless there is any additional postprocessing or image quality benefits.  Am I to assume that xvba is the Linux equivalent of Windows' EVR?

I will continue to test and report settings for the 4870x2 as time permits.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi guys!
It's the first time I write here in the bar! Nice to meet you!

I was wonderingif you coud help me!

Today, to play games, I uninstalled the opengl drivers and installed the catalyst from the aur and configured them following the wiki guide.

They work, but not well: I'm not experiencing windows resizing problems or similar, but simply I am experiencing some lags: with mouse, scroll bars, games and so on... As if I am skipping some steps!

I tried many things, like adding "nopat" in grub (I run grub2 from debian testing in dual boot) and modifying the xorg.conf like said in the wiki. I also tried installing from aur xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix, but with no results...

I also disabled the ondemand cpufreq, then also tried setting it to performance, but the outcome was no different...

I really don't know what to do... Do you have any suggestions?

I have an Ati mobility radeon hd 2600.

Thanks in advance!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi guys,

I've recently replaced catalyst-generator by catalyst-daemon and now

when I update with yaourt -Syu --aur I got this message:

missing dependency for catalyst-2.6.35-ARCH : catalyst-generator

Did someone know how I could get rid of it?

Thanks

Maybe this thread is of interest
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26645

Could some people who know more about catalyst collect more data? Some people consider this even a real bug.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm using the catalyst drivers from the repo and it has been mostly working, but recently I noticed a weird problem.  If I highlight some text in my browser and then drag it a little bit, it will stay on screen after I let go of the mouse button.  Here is an example: http://jowilkin.thayer.dartmouth.edu/screen1.png

If I minimize the browser window, it still stays there: http://jowilkin.thayer.dartmouth.edu/screen2.png http://jowilkin.thayer.dartmouth.edu/screen3.png

Here are my installed packages:

> pacman -Sl catalyst
catalyst catalyst 10.10-1 [installed]
catalyst catalyst-daemon 10.10-2
catalyst catalyst-generator 10.10-2
catalyst catalyst-hook 10.10-2
catalyst catalyst-utils 10.10-2 [installed]
catalyst lib32-catalyst-utils 10.10-1 [installed]
catalyst xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix 1.9.0-1
catalyst xvba-video 0.7.6-1

I'm using metacity as my window manager with standard gtk window decorator.

Is the patched xorg server the answer here?  I guess I will try it and see if it helps.

Edit: the patched xorg seems to have resolved the issue.  My dual monitor setup is now borked however sad  Shouldn't be too hard to get working again.

Edit2: I was using a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d to run xrandr to setup my dual monitors, that doesn't seem to be working with the xorg package for some reason.  I instead put the command in ~/.xprofile and it is running correctly.  The only difference is that it doesn't run until I login, so the gdm screen is mirrored across both monitors during login, and then I get regular dual monitor view after login.

Edit3: Sorry, spoke too soon on the fix, my issue was NOT fixed by switching to the patched xorg server.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

The Linux catalyst 10.11 version has still the ATI branding in the CCC.
But they fixed a bug again which I have reported at their bugzilla. smile
Two others were fixed with the last versions already.
So it is not useless to report bugs to AMD but it takes some months for a fix.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

AUR and [catalyst] repo were updated to catalyst 10.11

Edit: oh, almost forgot: once again ati didn't nicelly surprise me with fresh stable kernel support - so we still need patches for 2.6.36 kernel.
They (ati) even put those patches into packages/Mandriva so they know how what's going on, but making official support... no, what for?

Just a mention: we've got problems with 2.6.37 rc2 kernel support, it doesn't look good atm, hope someone will figure it out before .37 stable release

You mean upstream with AMD?  I will try to do it when I have time.  Switching my window manager to compiz seems to have taken care of the problem for me for now.  Unfortunately the machine with the issue is my desktop at work and I'll be traveling for at least the next two weeks.

It's a bug. Catalyst doesn't update a specific file, but I forgot, which one it was.

From the Wiki :

amdcccle is showing different catalyst's version
It's because information about version is stored in /etc/ati/amdpcsdb file. This file is created while first run of X/DE by freshly installed catalyst, and later it's not updated. Solution: kill your X/DE, then remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb, restart your X/DE, and then set up amdcccle.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Got my 6870 (I know...) yesterday and setting it up in Linux didn't look too promising at first. As expected, I'll be using fglrx at least for a couple of months wink

Dual screen is working after setting it up with amdcccle (Catalyst 10.11), but for some reason awesome thinks my screen #1 is #2 and vice versa. Is there something I'm missing?
