alsaconf not working

New 64bit install with Gnome. All is good except after installing alsa-utils and running alsaconf it fails to find my hardware and also alsamixer will not run.

Re: alsaconf not working

Forget alsaconf, it's always been half-assed, and you don't need it anyway.

Show the error message from running "alsamixer" as your normal user.

Re: alsaconf not working

As a normal user

~]$ alsaconf
You must be root to use this script.

as a user alsamixer gives
~]$ alsamixer
cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument

As root alsaconf gives me the errors in my previous post.
I am in the audio group.

Thanks brebs

You probably need a model= entry. See e.g. Ubuntu help. Google for your PC/motherboard model, to see how other Linux users with the same hardware fared.

Re: alsaconf not working

Hi brebs,
I googled the linux intel sound driver for my chipset and it installed Ok. No change in alsa though.
Then I installed the previous udev which I got from an outdated mirror but still no change.
I've done lots of Arch installs over the last 5 years and never has alsa failed me.
What do you think about changing to pulseaudio.
I gotta have my sounds :-)

Re: alsaconf not working

Pulseaudio is a piece of garbage written by Satan to demoralize and confuse Ubuntu users, who don't need it, don't understand it, and think that fiddling with it will magically fix ALSA. It will not. They are separate layers.

If you are looking at an "alternative", consider opensound. Better yet, forget opensound and do a bit of googling yourself. You're still providing next to no decent debugging info, so run:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh
bash alsa-info.sh

Re: alsaconf not working

Your "model=realtek ALC887" is wrong - there shouldn't be a space, and of course you should enter a model that's recognized by ALSA.

So, google your hardware, to see what other Linux users with the same hardware have done.
