[Solved] switch to console from slim

Hi all,

New arch user here,

I have a problem with Slim that's already been documented and [Solved] on the forums : I can't log in, as normal user or as root; the problem is now I don't have acces to the console so I can work on the problem. I searched the forum and the wiki, but I didn't found a solution.

*The error I get when I try to login is "Can't execute login command"
*Typing "console" in the log case doesn't work (nothing happens)
* At Ctrl Alt F... the screen goes dark

How can I acces the console in order to edit Slim's config ?

Ctrl-Alt-F2

You could use F1, but Slim has some issues sharing the first console. A stock Arch should allow you to use 1 through 6. 7 through 9 are usually X

Okay, now that I reread your post, I missed the point.

How do you start Slim? Is it in your rc.conf file, or do you use run levels in /etc/inittab??

Why not use a LiveCD to edit Slim's config file?

wouldn't it be possible to append "3" to the kernel boot line? (without the quotes)
Then you should boot into runlevel 3 = console.

For the record, that only works if you start slim with inittab. If you use the daemons array in rc.conf, it is a different matter. That was where I was heading with my query

You could try this as it's similar to what "madeye" said but append a plain "s" to the kernel line. Puts you in "single-user mode" my password seems to work then. Actually I think what you guys are discussing is the same thing affecting me at the moment. I need to investigate this more. Hope this helps!!

Update: This was not my issue after all. My issue was that I switched to using sha512 passwords via the Wiki page. I was also using fgetty which doesn't support sha512 passwords. Fixed now!
